Boys take back seat to girls this weekPosted Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at 10:20 AM
For one week a year, boys basketball teams in Indiana take a back seat to the girls hoop squads, as if Title IX were really in effect.
With the girls sectionals set for Tuesday, Friday and Saturday nights, all of the area boys basketball teams will play Thursday night and half of the six also will play Saturday afternoon in games that were moved for one reason or another.
Thursday's schedule include White River Valley (7-8) at Washington Catholic (4-10), Linton-Stockton (4-12) at North Knox (3-14), Terre Haute South (16-2) at Bloomfield (9-8), North Daviess (12-5) at Union (Dugger) (4-12), Vincennes Rivet (14-2) at Shakamak (8-9) and Eastern Greene (9-8) at Edgewood (8-7).
All are schedule to tip-off with the JV games at 6 p.m., with the exception of South at Bloomfield, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Saturday schedule includes Eastern Greene at Clay City 10-5), Union (Dugger) at White River Valley and Bloomfield at North Central (12-3). The Eastern Greene game will begin with the JV at noon while the other two teams are set to begin at 1 p.m.
White River Valley will be short-handed for the Washington Catholic game as Jared Shelton, Levi Hostetter, Ethan Dyer and Billy Dove will be serving the second of a two-game suspension for violation of team rules, according to WRV coach Gene Hall.
WRV, who has beaten the Cardinals in the only two meeting between the two schools in the past 15 years, will be looking to break a three-game losing streak while WC is coming off of a 39-31 victory over New Harmony.
The Wolverines are 3-2 in the Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference while Union (Dugger) is 1-4 in league play heading into its two final conference games this week.
North Daviess will bring a 12-5 overall mark into the game against the Bulldogs. They are 3-0 in league play.
The Cougars have beaten the Bulldogs nine straight times.
Eastern Greene still tops the conference with a 4-0 mark.
The T-Birds have won 4 of 6, but are coming off of a 50-42 loss at home to South Knox Saturday.
The Mustangs have a 9-6 advantage in the past 15 meetings in the series with the Thunderbirds, including a 75-38 victory last February at EGHS.
Clay City is one of the hottest teams in the area, having won five games in a row. They are 2-2 in the SWIAC. They will host North Central Thursday in a game that also counts in the TRC standings.
The Miners will travel to Bicknell to face the Warriors in a match-up of two Class 2A Sectional opponents. Linton-Stockton will bring a two-game winning streak into the game that was postponed the first week of the season because the Miner football team advanced to the semistate.
North Knox has won 17 times while losing six in the past 23 meetings with the Miners. The Warriors prevailed 53-50 at the sectional a year ago.
Bloomfield will host Terre Haute South Thursday before traveling to Farmersburg to play a make-up game against North Central Saturday afternoon.
South has won 5 of 6 meetings with the Cardinals, including 67-28 at Terre Haute a year ago.
South brings a five-game winning into the game while the Cardinals have lost to Orleans and North Daviess in their past two games.
This will be the 11th meeting between BHS and North Central, with the Cards having a 7-3 advantage in the series. Bloomfield won 46-36 in January 2008 at Glover Gymnasium.
Shakamak will try to break a five-game losing skid when the Rivet Patriots come to Jasonville Thursday. This will be a rematch of the Greene County Invitational championship game. Rivet won the earlier meeting 69-54, but the Lakers have a 12-7 mark in recent meetings between the two schools.
It should prove to be an interesting weekend as WRV, Shakamak and Bloomfield hope to get things going in a different direction while Union (Dugger) and Linton-Stockton hope to build on recent wins and Eastern Greene hopes to find its shooting eye.
