I happened to notice an interesting announcement in an area newspaper recently.

It was a story about the Northeast School Corporation and they had accepted the resignation of Dugger Elementary School teacher Steve Meurer at their last board meeting.

Meurer, a former boys assistant and girls varsity basketball coach at Union (Dugger) High School, is now coaching the girls varsity squad at North Knox. He led the Lady Warriors to a Class 2A Sectional title at Linton-Stockton last season.

Steve and Tammy Meurer, the former Union (Dugger) volleyball coach, still teaches second grade at Dugger.

The Meurer's now reside in Bicknell and Tammy will have to make the commute to Dugger by herself

"I was really happy for Steve," said Tammy. "But I really depended on Steve to do all the driving. He would even stop and get out and get me a cup of coffee when it was raining. There were times I would fall asleep on the way home.

"But if Steve was going to continue as coach, he wanted to have a teaching job at North Knox."

Steve will be a Title I instructor for math in grades 4-5-6 at the elementary school in Bicknell. He had taught sixth grade math recently at Dugger.

Tammy, who currently teaches second grade, will be starting her 21st season as a teacher at Dugger. She said it will be unlikely that she will teach anywhere else.

A teacher with her experience would be at the top of the scale anywhere else they taught and that would make it cost prohibitive for her to get another position.

"I am happy that one of us is with our kids at North Knox."

Tammy coached the Lady Warrior volleyball team last season, but said she is uncertain if she will return to the bench.

"Our oldest will be playing football in junior high," said Tammy. "The kids are always so busy with so many things that it is tough for Steve and I both to coach.

"But we will just have to wait and see how things work out."
