Standout individual performances highlight ladies' season

Posted Thursday, March 4, 2010, at 2:10 PM

Stephanie Fougerousse of Linton-Stockton and Alicia Tally of White River Valley were two of the standout performers among area girls basketball players during the 2009-10 season.

Fougerousse, who played the first three years of her career at WRV, tossed in 564 points this season, an average of 22.6.

With the 1,237 she scored at White River Valley, the all-time record for the Lady Wolverines, she finished with a grand total of 1,801 points, which is the most ever by a girls player in Greene County.

Bloomfield's Lindsey Secrest, an Indiana All-Star in 2000, scored 1,788 during her career for the Lady Cardinals, including winning the Class A state championship as a sophomore in 1998.

Fougerousse scored a career-high 40 points in a 65-55 victory over Shakamak in the fifth-place game at the Vincennes Rivet Holiday Classic on Dec. 30.

That was at least the 14th game where an area girls player scored 40 or more in a game, led by Secrest's 49, which happened while she was a senior at BHS.

Fougerousse's previous career-high was 36, which happened in 2007-08 season as a sophomore at WRV. It came in a 69-47 sectional victory against host Clay City.

The Lady Miner school record of 42 was set by Julina Stamm against Shakamak. This came during the 1985-86 season, ironically the last campaign that Linton-Stockton won a sectional championship in girls basketball before Fougerousse and her teammates claimed the Class 2A title at South Knox last month.

Gretchen Booher of Linton-Stockton scored 41 in 1990.

Fougerousse scored 30 or more on five different occasions this season. The center tallied 34 in wins over Monrovia and Eastern Greene. She also grabbed 23 rebounds against EGHS.

Fougerousse, who shot 55 percent from the field and 81 percent from the line, had 365 rebounds this season, an average of 14.6. She had 1,169 career rebounds.

She scored 30 and had 23 boards in a win over Shoals in December and had 30 points and 17 rebounds in a 52-42 victory at Union in January.

Tally might have had one of the most remarkable turnarounds by any senior in the history of high school basketball (I know it might be getting a little bit carried away).

Tally averaged just over six points per game as a role player for the 2008-09 WRV squad that won the Class A sectional.

Being left as the only scoring option on a team that won two games this season, Tally averaged almost 18 points per game. Not many people almost triple their scoring average, even when you are forced to take most of the shots out of necessity.

Tally scored 30 points in a victory at Eminence back in December. In a loss to Linton-Stockton, she also scored 30 in January.

In a game where four Lady Wolverines -- out of seven -- fouled out against Washington Catholic in February, Tally was one of three WRV players remaining on the floor at the end of a 59-54 loss.

When it was all over, Tally had scored 38 points, breaking the school record of Fougerousse by two points.

"I was very, very proud of Alicia. I think she averaged about 6.2 points per game last year and she hit for almost 18 per game this year, including setting a single-game school record. She really carried us this season," said WRV coach Joe Pigg.

Olivia Robison of Linton-Stockton set the Lady Miner record for 3-pointers in a game with eight against Shakamak in a regular-season victory in December.

Bri Ward and Hannah Gennicks each had made six treys in a game earlier.

Former Lady Miner coach and current Linton-Stockton superintendent Nick Karazsia said that Stamm would have been up on that list and added a couple of hundred points to her all-time Lady Miner leading career total of 1,664 points if the 3-point shot would have been available during her career.

While becoming the all-time leading scorer at Union last season with 1,453 points, MaKaylee Pirtle had nine games where she scored at lead 30 or more.

She had 33 as a junior against West Vigo and 32 twice, both as a senior against Lawrenceville, Ill. and North Central.
