Updating Miner football recordsPosted Thursday, November 4, 2010, at 4:09 PM
Now that I have the stats from guru Darren Clayton, we can now say officially that Linton-Stockton junior Kent Helton ran for 209 yards in a 42-12 victory over North Knox at home Oct. 29 in the sectional semifinals.
I had Helton for 213.
Either way, it was the fifth time that a Miner had eclipsed the 200-yard rushing plateau in a game.
It was a year and two weeks ago that Evan Magni went for 322 yards in a sectional victory at Tecumseh.
That broke the previous mark of 270 by Matt Gambill, which came in a 55-0 victory over North Knox at Roy Williams Field on Oct. 2, 2008.
Randy Lehman torched Union (Dugger) for 258 yards on Oct. 9, 1992. The Miners defeated the Bulldogs 55-14 at Linton.
Justin Anderson ran for 229 yards, the fourth most in Miner history, during a game in the 8-3 1982 season.
David Bowman (192), Lehman (189), Chris Richards (162) and Jarman Lannan (155) are also on the official list for most rushing yards in a game. Let me know if there is anyone else that should be in the top 10.
Helton has rushed 130 times for 880 yards and 12 TDs this year. Ty Scott has 772 on 123 attempts and 12 touchdowns.
The duo has led the Miner offense, which has rushed for 2,392 yards on 402 carries, 5.95 yards per attempt.
Helton needs 120 to become the 11th Miner in modern times to eclipse 1,000 yards in a season.
Matt Gamble went for 1,764 in 1998, the most in Linton-Stockton history. The other backs to run for 1,000 or more in a season are Adam Brewer (1,618 yards in 2004), Magni (1,300 in 2009), Brent Sparks (1,208 in 1987), Jeff Suthard (1,142 in 1984), J.P Meurer (1,077 in 1982), David Bowman (1,032 in 1979), Tony Collins (1,029 in 1981), Justin Anderson ( 1,024 in 1982) and Lehman (1,008 in 1992).
Suthard has the records of 41 rushes in a game, 224 carries in a season and 403 for his career (1982-1984). His single-season records came in 1984.
Sophomore quarterback Austin Karazsia has officially completed 139 of 239 passes for 2,021 with 20 TDs and 13 interceptions.
The completions have already eclipsed the previous mark of 114 by Jeremy Newton in 2000.
He needs just five attempts against Perry Central to break the mark of 243 attempts by Mark Kaiser in 1986 and Jeremy Newton in 2000.
Karazsia, who earlier this year set the single-game marks of 27 completions and 353 yards and tied a record with five TD passes against North Daviess, also is closing in on another single-season record. Mark Kaiser threw for 2,083 yards in 1986. Karazsia, who passed Jake Gennicks (2,002 yards in 1999) for second, needs just 63 yards to eclipse Kaiser's record.
Karazsia's TDs this year are tied with Gennicks for second most in a single season. Gennicks tossed 20 in 1998 and broke his own record with 24 in 1999.
Dyllanne Deischer has booted 44 PATs this season. She is still 11 short of the record of 55 by Tony Moronez in 1998.
From 1995-98, Moronez kicked 81 point after touchdowns.
The sophomore should have a shot to break his career record.
Scott and Zane Hayden each have three fumble recoveries, halfway toward the record mark of six in a season by Tim Flynn (1998).
Koye Kaiser, Caleb Stuppy and Scott each have three interceptions to lead this year's Miners. Their combined total of nine picks pale in comparison to the records of 12 interceptions by Brent Sparks in 1987 and 11 by Magni last year and Newton in 2000.
Although Perry Central has three losses and has been unranked almost the entire season, Commodore back Mikey Wilkerson has set a PC record with 32 total touchdowns, including 30 on the ground.
He scored twice in a 14-13 victory over North Daviess last week, breaking the mark of 31 by Dwight Brown and Bo Gibson.
The only record that will count on Friday night is the final score when the Miners and Perry Central meet at 8:15 in the Class A Sectional 40 title game.
Will the Miners get their fourth consecutive sectional title or will Perry Central get its first since 2006?
Bundle up and enjoy.
