I know that people have turned the page from volleyball to girls basketball season. But something happened near the end of the 2010 season that probably went unnoticed by most. I am not the most astute judge of volleyball talent and I missed it too.

Coach Tammy Meurer is slowly building a volleyball program at North Knox High School, much like she did at Union (Dugger) High School.

In was back in 1989 when Meurer took over the Lady Bulldogs and they were at rock bottom, or pretty close to it. They went from being a circle game (where teams circled you as a win every season), to being an opponent you did not want to face.

In 18 seasons in Dugger, Meurer teams won 20 matches or more 11 different times and had two years where they won at least 30, including 2002 when they posted an undefeated regular season and finished 34-1.

Meurer took a perennial doormat and won three Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference titles, six Tri-River Conference championships, eight Sullivan County titles, won four consecutive sectionals (2002-2005) and were regional runner-up once.

Even in 2006, which turned out to be her last year as coach at Union (Dugger), the Lady Bulldogs still managed to win 20 matches and were competitive despite turmoil which led to her resignation. Meurer left with a 343-152 record.

The Lady Bulldogs have had four different coaches in the four seasons since she left. They have won a combined 20 matches and none the past two seasons despite the effort of four good coaches.

Meurer, who still teaches at Dugger Elementary, and her North Knox squad finished this season with an 8-20 mark.

"You really don't want to know our record, now do you,? Meurer replied when we were putting our sectional preview last month.

Meurer said this was a pretty enjoyable season.

" I have five freshmen on the varsity in prime roles: Libero, one of our setters in a 6-2 offense, one of my middle hitters, and both of my outside hitters," said Meurer. "My other middle is a sophomore, so I am very optimistic about the future of North Knox volleyball."

When not coaching and teaching, Tammy is a full-time mom.

Daughter Madison is a seventh grader, and Makinzi is a fourth grader.

"Both of them are expecting me to be coaching when they get to high school," said Meurer, who said it is not easy teaching at one school and coaching at another. "But it has been fun teaching the underclassmen the fast-paced game at the varsity level.

"They have really improved and have been excited along the way."

Meurer's Lady Warriors won twice as many matches this season compared to 2009, notice the improvement theme.

"Oh, yeah, I know our record isn't very respectable," she said. "However, we have actually doubled our wins from last year.

"That is a good and bad thing -- good because we are showing growth and bad because four wins isn't saying much. I knew when I took this position, though, that this program was way down and needed a lot of work."

Meurer, whose Lady Warriors were competitive early in the sectional before falling to South Knox 25-23, 25-13, 25-8 at Eastern Greene, said she hopes to see North Knox reaping some rewards in the next few years.

The Lady Warriors have won two sectional titles in school history -- 1999 and 2000. It would not surprise me if they add a third trophy to their glass case sometime in the near future.

North Knox is very fortunate to get Tammy. I respect her immensely not only as a coach but as a person. North Knox will need space very soon to hang conference and post season banners for girls high school volleyball!! By the way, Steve is one hell of a coach too; I would let my daughters play for him anytime!!
