Miners putting up some impressive numbersPosted Wednesday, September 14, 2011, at 7:29 PM
Austin Karazsia continues his impressive start to the 2011 season.
The 6-5 junior quarterback, who has tossed 14 TDs to just two interceptions in four games, threw for 384 yards and five touchdowns in a 54-20 victory at West Vigo Sept. 9.
The yardage broke his own single-game mark, which was 353 yards against North Daviess last September.
His five scoring passes tied the single-game mark, owned previously by Karazsia (last year against North Daviess), Keith Cunningham and twice by Jarman Lannan.
Unofficially, Karazsia threw for 214 yards and three TDs in the first quarter. Not sure what the record would be for yards and touchdowns thrown for in a quarter.
After scoring 41 points in the first quarter a couple of weeks ago in a 69-13 victory at Wood Memorial, some asked if that would have been a record for most points in any quarter by the Miners.
I will have to do some research on that one.
They scored 28 more in the first last week against the Vikings.
When Brad Thomas hauled in six passes for 200 yards at West Vigo, it is believed to have been just the second time a Miner football player had 200 yards receiving in a game.
Bryan Slay had a record nine receptions for a record 218 yards in a 31-27 sectional championship game victory over visiting Tecumseh in 1986.
Slay hauled in an 78-yard touchdown pass from Mark Kaiser against Springs Valley in 1986. This is the longest touchdown pass I have listed in my very unofficial records.
Thomas had TD receptions of 75 and 73 from Karazsia last week, thought to be the second and third longest in Miner history.
Koye Kaiser hauled in a 70-yarder from Karazsia against Wood, thought to be the fourth longest.
Slay still owns the Miner record for receptions in a season (50) and career (86). His 1,331 yards in 1986 and career mark of 1,771 still stand. So does his 14 TD catches in 1986.
Even though omitted on the single-season receiving top 25 on the Indiana High School Athletic Association's website, Slay's total for 1986 is the 25th most by a player in Indiana High School football history.
It is amazing to think what he would have done if he had played more than two varsity seasons. Jeremy Burress caught 22 TDs to set the Miner career mark before finishing his football career at Linton-Stockton in 1999.
Thomas' 85-yard kickoff return in week one against Eastern Greene is believed to have tied the third longest for Linton-Stockton.
Jordan Hollingsworth took a kickoff 99 yards against Milan in 2001 and Tom Beyan went 95 yards with a kickoff against Marshall, Ill. in 1952.
Kaiser scampered 85 yards with a kickoff at Owen Valley at the end of the 1985 regular season.
Dylanne Deischer has already booted 25 PATs this season, after making 46 a year ago.
Tony Moronez is listed as the single-season record holder with 55 in 1998.
Deischer booted 40 as a freshman in 2009 and if my math is correct, she currently has 111 PATs, easily eclipsing the old record of 81 by Tony Moronez (1995-1998).
Deischer kicked nine against Wood, tying Cliff Bowers' mark of nine against North Central in 2005.
Elmer Oliphant booted 20 in a 125-0 victory over Sullivan in 1909.
That's all for now.
