Spring sports postseason begins next weekPosted Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at 6:56 PM
Despite not having all the particulars and the fact that the regular season ends this week for a handful of sports, I am going to take a glance at the upcoming Indiana High School Athletic Association postseason tournaments for area spring sports teams.
Pairings for the annual softball state tournament series will be announced, starting at 4 p.m. Thursday on IHSAAtv.org and later posted on www.ihsaa.org.
There has been a shift in sites for some of the local participants.
The Class 2A Sectional will be hosted by Sullivan, which is joined by North Central, in a seven team softball tournament. Those two Sullivan County teams will join last year's local 2A sectional teams of Linton-Stockton, Eastern Greene, Bloomfield, North Knox and last year's champ South Knox.
The five-team Class A Clay City Sectional will obviously not include North Central. The Eels, Shakamak, Union and White River Valley return along with newcomer Eminence.
Both of those softball tournaments are scheduled to begin on Monday, May 21 and have to be concluded by Saturday, May 26.
With just five teams, the tournament at Clay City (if not interrupted by that four-letter word, rain) will be scheduled for May 21-23.
With seven teams at Sullivan, the softball tournament will be scheduled for May 21-24, taking one extra night because of the two extra teams.
The winners of those sectionals will host regional championship games on Tuesday, May 29. Start time will be 7 p.m. whenever possible.
Forest Park will host a four-team semistate on Saturday, June 2 in Class 2A while North Daviess will have the Class A Semistate on the same day.
On Saturday, June 9 at 10:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Indianapolis Ben Davis will again host the four class state tournament games, starting with the Class A game first.
Softball tickets at the sectional will cost $5 per session or $8 for a season ticket; regional tickets will cost $5; semistate tickets will cost $6 (session) or $9 (season) and state finals tickets will cost $9.
The Class A baseball sectionals will again be at Shakamak with the Lakers hosting Union, White River Valley, Clay City and newcomer Eminence.
The Class 2A baseball sectional remains at Linton-Stockton with the Miners hosting Eastern Greene, Bloomfield, South Knox, North Knox and newcomers Sullivan and defending Class A state runner-up North Central.
The IHSAA sets the following dates -- Thursday, May 24 through Monday, May 28 for the baseball sectionals. But with almost all of the participating school graduating the weekend of May 25-26, it will be interesting to see how local athletic directors set the schedules.
The pairings for baseball will be announced at 4 p.m. Tuesday and will again be available on IHSAAtv.org and later posted on www.ihsaa.org.
In baseball, the regionals feature four teams and the winner will have to win two games on Saturday, June 2.
The sectional winner at Linton-Stockton will now be part of the Southridge Regional, along with sectional winners from South Ripley, Providence and Southridge. Roy Herndon Field in Linton was the site for the regional last year.
In Class A, the Shakamak Sectional winner will now be part of the Morristown Regional, which will also include sectional winners from Northeast Dubois, South Central (Elizabeth) and Morristown.
Southern semistates, which will take place at Jasper and Plainfield (two different class championship games starting at 1 p.m.) on Saturday, June 9.
The state finals are set for Victory Field in Indianapolis on Friday, June 15 (one game, 7;30 p.m.) and three games (1 p.m., 4 p.m., 7 p.m.) on Saturday, June 16.
Baseball postseason tickets are the similar to softball: sectionals and regionals will cost $5 per session or $8 for a season ticket; semistate tickets will cost $6 and state finals tickets will cost $9 each day.
The draw for the North Daviess girls tennis sectional will be announced Monday night. The IHSAA mandates that sectionals begin on Wednesday, May 16.
The host Lady Cougars, Bloomfield, White River Valley and Linton-Stockton will make up the field.
The two winners on Wednesday will likely play in the title match, either Thursday, May 17, Friday, May 18 or Saturday, May 19.
The winner at North Daviess will meet the Vincennes Lincoln Sectional champion in the first match at Jasper Regional on May 22 or 23. Sectional champs at Jasper and Loogootee also will compete.
Jasper will host the semistate on Saturday, May 26 with the state finals set for June 1-2 at Carmel High School.
Shakamak and Linton-Stockton will be moving from Terre Haute North to Bloomington North for the boys and girls track and field sectionals on Tuesday, May 15 (girls) and Thursday, May 17 (boys).
The top four finishers in each event will advance to the regionals, which will be May 22 and May 24, both at North as well. This also will be a change for the Lakers and Miners, who previously went to the Evansville Central Regional.
The top three finishers or those who achieve state qualifying standards will make the track and field state finals on Friday, June 1 (girls) and Saturday, June 2 (boys) at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University, Bloomington.
The boys golf sectional will be Friday, June 1 at Otis Park in Bedford. Eastern Greene will be the only local team competing there along with host BNL and Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Brown County, Brownstown Central, Crothersville, Eastern (Pekin), Edgewood, Mitchell, Salem, Seymour, Trinity Lutheran and West Washington.
Linton-Stockton's Phil Harris Golf Course will be the site for the other local sectional.
The 13-team field also includes Bloomfield, Clay City, North Central, Northview, Owen Valley, Shakamak, Sullivan, Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, Union, West Vigo and White River Valley.
The top three teams at each sectional and the top three individuals not on qualifying teams will advance to the regional.
Providence will host the regional for the BNL Sectional and Country Oaks at Montgomery (Washington) will be the host for the sectional qualifiers at Evansville Mater Dei, Jasper, Vincennes Lincoln and Linton-Stockton.
The top three teams and top three low individuals will qualify for the state finals, set for Tuesday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 13 at The Legends Golf Club in Franklin.
As always, it will be interesting to see who can make a run to the state finals as teams or individuals. Good luck to all athletes and coaches.
