Flashback to high school??

Posted Monday, May 11, 2009, at 9:35 AM

If you'd have told me that I was to interview some of my teachers about their retirement when I was in high school, you would've got a cocky "Yeah, right."

Flash forward several years later and here I sit.

Last week I wrapped up two interviews with my former Linton-Stockton High School teachers and I'm knocking out another one later this week.

First up was Linda Long. She was my typing and shorthand teacher.

It was funny during the recent interview I told her that I never 'got' shorthand and was lucky to pass it. She looked at me with a grin and said, "Whatever works for you."

And with my job, what works for me is my own shorthand -- which includes my own abbreviations and other stuff that would look like complete nonsense to anyone else.

And when it comes to typing, my Rams, an eighth grader at Linton-Stockton Junior High, has skill that I'll never have.

He rocks at keeping his fingers on home row and he is fast as well as accurate when it comes to typing.

As for Mrs. (Linda) Long she has 44 years of experience at the school.

That's a lot of patience, if you ask me.

As for my second teacher interview it was with Barbara Herman -- who was my English teacher.

As a high school student, English was one of my favorite subjects.

I didn't struggle with it like I did in math.

Writing has always been therapeutic to me -- even as a high school student -- I didn't mind writing and I took pride in my work.

Mrs. (Barbara) Herman taught her first class at the school in 1984 and became full-time in 1985.

I always appreciated Mrs. Herman's English class. She was open-minded and interesting to listen to.

Together, Long and Herman are leaving behind memories, years of experience and a lifetime of learning at LSHS.

Later this week, I'll be interviewing Jack Johnson -- who was also my former English teacher.

Looking forward to it....and if you remember me in high school I'm the last student you'd think would be interviewing you, right?

Don't worry about it...I'm still laughing.

Mrs. Herman was always one of my favorite teachers also. We gladly gave her the nickname "The Hermanator." :)
