Woman shows honesty when she pays for extra newspaper

Posted Friday, February 5, 2010, at 9:13 AM

The idea for this column came from Elisa Blocker who is the circulation manager here at the Greene County Daily World.

A couple of weeks ago she reported that a young lady had called to tell her that she owed 75 cents to the GCDW.

The story goes like this:

"A young lady called me and told me that she was at the Orscheln store in Linton and preceded to purchase a GCDW newspaper from the paper box out front," Elisa said. "She pulled out the paper and went on her way only to notice later that two papers were stuck together."

Instead of not worrying about it, Elizabeth Wyckoff called to confess.

Apparently Elizabeth felt that not paying for the extra paper was stealing even if it was only 75 cents.

But, she also drove all the way from Greenwood to pay up. (I'm impressed!)

Elisa also said, "She should be very proud of herself and I was proud of her ... I am so thankful that there are still honest and conscientious people. It kind of strengthens my outlook on mankind."

* "Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest." -- Mark Twain
