Gilbert having successful freshman campaign for Warrior spikers
Posted Monday, October 19, at 10:42 PM
KEWANEE, ILL. -- One thing about living in a new area is not knowing your surroundings. As I was driving around in northern Peoria County (Ill.) one day I noticed a road sign for a town called Kewanee. It didn't hit me at first, but I knew this name sounded familiar for a reason. Finally before I made it back to the house, I remembered that 2009 Shakamak High School grad Jessi Gilbert was attending college at Black Hawk East Community College on a volleyball scholarship, located in Kewanee...

WNBA Finals proves to be just as exciting as NBA games
Posted Monday, October 5, at 3:07 AM

In my last column I mentioned some of my great memories as a sports writer here at the Greene County Daily World. As I have moved on, Sunday night proved to be yet another memorable moment in my journalism career. With the end of the baseball regular season along with football season in full force, many people may not have been aware of an event taking place in Indianapolis Sunday evening -- Game 3 of the Women's National Basketball Association Finals...

One last look back on the last two years before I depart
Posted Thursday, September 17, at 6:18 PM

As I am sure most of you have noticed, there has been a new person in the sports department here at the Greene County Daily World the past couple weeks. While I was on a mini vacation a couple months ago I attended a couple Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs Class A minor league team) and ran into another sports editor at a paper in the area. One thing led to another, and just like that yours truly will no longer be here and Rick Curl will be taking my place...

McBride more than just a coach
Posted Tuesday, September 1, at 6:59 PM

One of the many pleasures of my job as a sports writer is meeting a select few people that make a positive impact on people's life outside of a basketball court, football field or baseball and softball diamonds, etc.. Former Bloomfield boys basketball and cross country head coach, Ron McBride fits this billing to a tee...

Local softball team gearing up for Nationals
Posted Thursday, August 6, at 4:04 PM

As the end of summer is winding down and youth baseball/softball teams are playing in final all-star tournaments, the local adult softball scene is starting to heat up. Local teams have played in state tournaments, with one team qualifying for nationals, and there are several upcoming local tournaments including two benefit tournaments...

Area schools finding it hard to keep positions filled
Posted Thursday, July 2, at 4:30 PM

"One and done" is a common phrase used for blue-chip basketball players that leave college for the NBA after their freshman campaign. The same phrase can also be used to describe some athletic positions at a couple area high schools recently. For the second straight year Bloomfield and Eastern Greene High Schools are both in search of a new athletic director. Last summer both schools made the decision to not hire locally and turn to administrators from out of town...

One final shout-out to spring sports teams and individuals.
Posted Friday, June 26, at 3:57 PM

The spring sports season is officially complete, but not without some spectacular team and individual performances from our area athletes. I would like to take one final moment to recognize and congratulate these outstanding performers. First of all I would like to mention the magical run the Linton-Stockton softball team made this postseason. ...

Sometimes the better team doesn't always win
Posted Tuesday, June 16, at 3:33 PM

The game of softball not always come down to who has the best pitcher or the better team. Sometimes creating your own breaks and having lady luck on your side plays a big role in the success of a team as well. The Linton-Stockton softball team is a prime example of this. This past weekend the Miners quest for a state championship fell just short, as they came up on the losing end of a 1-0 decision to Madison-Grant in the Class 2A championship game...

Track not as glorious as other sports, but still exciting
Posted Tuesday, May 12, at 8:47 PM

The stands at high school football fields may not be packed on Friday nights during the spring like they are on Friday nights during the fall, but don't let that determine whether you make it through the gates or not. Track and field meets can be just as entertaining as some football games...

Some things are more important than winning
Posted Tuesday, April 28, at 6:13 PM

In my column last week I mentioned that people should look at the bigger picture when it comes to making decisions on coaches rather than just wins and loses. It was kind of funny, after going back and reading through my words, that I realized I needed to practice what I preach, so to say...

Lets try giving coaches a pat on the back instead of grief
Posted Tuesday, April 21, at 5:50 PM

For the past year and half I have woke up just about every morning here in Greene County, with the exception for when I travel out of town. I work here in Greene County covering high school teams here in Greene County as well as Union (Dugger) in Sullivan County...

Does the all-conference system really work?
Posted Tuesday, April 14, at 9:10 PM

First of all I would just like to congratulate all the local players that have been named to post-season all-conference teams. In the story to follow, I just want to clarify that in no way, shape or form am I trying to take away from any members that were named to these teams, just merely voicing my opinion on the new format...

Barnes to be honored at Miners home opener
Posted Thursday, March 26, at 3:52 PM

As warmer weather reaches the area, and we once again flip the page on the calendar, it's time for America's favorite pastime -- BASEBALL!! Bloomfield will kick off the area schedule with home games on Tuesday and Wednesday against Northeast Dubois and North Knox, but the community may want to circle Thursday, April 2 on the calendar...

It's that time again; Could be maddest tournament yet
Posted Wednesday, March 18, at 9:03 PM

The Memphis Tigers men's basketball team is playing the disrespect card once again this year, but they may not have the biggest beef with this years selection committee. My advice to John Calipari and his Tigers -- take a look at the Butler Bulldogs and then get back with me...

Who do you think will be crowned sectional champs?
Posted Monday, March 2, at 8:37 PM

Its hard to believe that we have turned another page on the calendar and it is now March. This time of the year could possibly be one of the best months for sports -- spring training starts for baseball, the NBA playoff picture starts tightening up and of course it would not be the same without March Madness...

Some rules I would change
Posted Tuesday, February 24, at 3:29 PM

First off, I would like to start out by saying congratulations to the White River Valley girls basketball season for another outstanding season. The season may have ended a couple games sooner than what they would have wished for, but another conference title, sectional title and an 18-5 record is nothing to be ashamed of...

Wish come true; Wolverines have Trailblazer in their sights
Posted Wednesday, February 18, at 3:03 PM

Sometimes a devastating loss can be a blessing in disguise. The White River Valley girls basketball team had their season come to an end last season in a lopsided 19-point loss to the University Trailblazers in the regional championship game. Since that loss, the team has had one thing on their mind -- get back to the same game this season, and WIN. ...

Boyd more about just X's and O's
Posted Monday, February 16, at 5:09 PM

In today's world of sports, from elementary and at every stage all the way up to the professional ranks, a coach is measured by the amount of wins and losses he/she accumulates. At more developmental levels, such as high school, on the court success, or lack thereof, more times than not overshadows the bigger picture -- life lessons...

Pizza Hut Classic provides reason for single class tournament
Posted Friday, January 2, at 3:49 PM

One of the most heated discussions among local sports fans -- besides a playoff system in college football -- is whether or not there should be class basketball in Indiana. Although I may not have the amount of experience as some of my fellow colleagues, I would consider myself old school when it comes to this topic. I am in favor of one single class...

Miner fans help team to higher level
Posted Wednesday, November 19, at 5:32 PM

I have had the privilege of experiencing some great supporting crowds in my early days of being a sports journalist. Not to diss any cheerleaders or band members out there, but in my opinion a great loud and proud crowd can bolster the performance of the student-athletes more than anything...
