Who do you think will be crowned sectional champs?

Posted Monday, March 2, 2009, at 8:37 PM

Its hard to believe that we have turned another page on the calendar and it is now March. This time of the year could possibly be one of the best months for sports -- spring training starts for baseball, the NBA playoff picture starts tightening up and of course it would not be the same without March Madness.

The girls basketball season is over for all the area teams and now it's the boys turn for their post-season push.

Although I am not a fan of class basketball -- which I will leave that for another blog in the near future I am sure -- both the area sectionals could prove for some very exciting basketball to be played over the next few days.

At the Class A White River Valley Sectional it seems that any one of five teams could advance to the next round. Yes, I said five teams and not just three or four. Although Union (Dugger) does not sport a gaudy record by any means, they can still make some noise -- expecting that leading scorer B.J. Howard will be back in the line-up for the Bulldogs.

Reading comments that were once allowed on sports stories on this website and talking with some people in the Jasonville community, some people questioned the coaching ability of veteran coach Steve Brett of Shakamak. Their 11-10 record heading into the post-season did not measure up to the high expectations heading into the season from the defending sectional champions, but it appears Brett has his talented squad buying into what he has to offer towards the end of the season. The Lakers will be riding a three-game winning streak into their match-up against North Central Tuesday night. The once heavily favored team to successfully defend their sectional crown, seems to have some much needed momentum heading into the post-season.

The two teams split their two prior meetings during the season, with the Lakers getting the best of the Thunderbirds in the opening round of the Greene County Invitational before the T-Birds returned the favor in their Tri-River Conference match-up. My prediction -- the Lakers will continue their recently found success and earn a berth into the semifinals on Friday night against host White River Valley.

One of the other favorites heading into the sectional would be Clay City which are winners of nine of their last 11 heading into tournament play. The Eels open up play against Holy Cross in the first game on Tuesday night. I may be going out on a limb on this prediction, but I would have to say the Eels will advance to the semifinals in the most lopsided game of the tournament.

With those two predictions down, we move on to the Bulldogs against the Eels. With a healthy Howard in the line-up I will say the Bulldogs will put up a mighty fight, but in the end the Eels will come away with a hard fought victory setting up a championship match-up against the Lakers. Yes, I said Lakers, as I once again predict coach Brett's squad will continue to keep the momentum on their side as they record their second win on the season against the host Wolverines. Although coach Gene Hall's squad won the last meeting between the two teams, I feel like experience (both on the court and on the sidelines) will prevail.

No knock on coach Hall or his Wolverines, cause at times WRV looked like they could steam-roll through the sectional, but I will take a team with a sectional title experience under their belt and with confidence over a group still trying to find their identity.

This once again set up a game for the Lakers against a team that has got the best of them in their most recent meeting. So continuing the revenge theme, I will predict that the Lakers will claim their second straight sectional crown and third in the last four years.

Now on to the Class 2A Eastern Greene Sectional. According to Bloomfield head coach Ron McBride, two-time defending sectional champion South Knox enters the contest head and shoulders above the five-team filled. I find it a little ironic that the Cardinals and Spartans will square off against one another in the semifinal Friday night. The two teams do not face each other in the regular season, but the Spartans did knock off the Cardinals last season in the sectional. Last year it was the fans of the Spartans that had a short trip to cheer on their team, as the site was in Knox County at North Knox. With this year's site being in Greene County -- at Eastern Greene High school -- I predict the Cardinals will prevail in an offensive struggle. The shorter distance for Bloomfield is not the only reason I feel McBride's squad will move into the championship. The rigorous schedule the Cardinals play year in and year out I feel will better prepare them for a strong post-season run pull off the minor upset.

Backing up a game, host Eastern Greene will play North Knox in the opening round game on Tuesday night. The Thunderbirds enter the post-season riding a five-game losing streak and defeated the Warriors earlier in the season. Continuing the avenge theme of the Class A sectional, I will say that the Warriors will pull off a mild upset against the host team and will advance to the semifinals against Linton-Stockton Friday night, who drew the bye.

Just like the Wolverines, coach Andy Igel's bunch just a couple weeks ago appeared as if they could be the team to challenge the Spartans, but a recent losing skid coupled with the pressure of playing in front of their home crowd for the first time in post-season play, I like the Warriors chances of knocking off the T-Birds.

In the semifinal against the Miners, I also like the Warriors to advance on to the championship against the Cardinals.

Saturday night midnight will come a little bit early for the Warriors as their Cinderella story will come to an end as Bloomfield will capture their first Class 2A sectional championship.

By no means do I consider myself an expert at picking games, especially at the high school level, but just thought I would share some of my hunches with all of you.

Feel free to leave you predictions, just try and be respectable with your comments towards other coaches and players.

Good luck to all the area teams in their quest for a sectional championship. I am sure there will be plenty of excitement to be played out at both local sectional sites.

North Knox over Eastern? Bloomfield over South Knox? Did you see South Knox steamroll your beloved Lakers?

I wish Good Luck to all teams in the Eastern Greene Sectional!

I have faith in my T-Birds to beat NK....Bloomfield vs. South Knox on Friday - that will be a great game to watch...

Travis.......Travis

I feel that the young t-bird team will step up and show the sectional fans who they really are.

In the Bloomfield/South Knox game, I feel that it will be Bloomfield by 3.....

My prediction will be Bloomfield and Eastern in the final game....Saturday night....two big rivals will via for the sectional title.

I found the actions of some Miner fans very disturbing! Linton is not in the same sectional as Shakamak, yet they felt the need to vandalize the Shakamak banners along Lone Tree Road. A lot of time and effort (not to mention money for the sheets!!!) went into making and displaying of these signs. Maybe they should put their efforts towards making their own signs instead of defacing someone else's signs.

If you know who did this, please call the Sheriff's Department with the names.

This 1A sectional looks to be a doozy.

Clay City vs. Holy Cross- The hottest team draws the weakest team. Clay City big!

Shakamak vs. North Central- I think the winner takes the sectional. Shakamak is talented enough, but will they play defense. I've heard tons of people complain about Brett's style, but their earlier loss to NC had nothing to do with slowing Shakamak's offense...They just didn't play defense. I think Shakamak is peaking at the right time. Lakers win.

Clay City vs. Dugger- I just don't see Dugger having a shot unless Howard goes crazy....stranger things have happened. I'd still put my money on CC.

Shakamak vs. WRV- The earlier win for WRV didn't prove much to me. Birch was in the middle of his hot streak(scoring 30). Kid couldn't miss! Shakamak was without their starting PG and two of their 3 big guys in their 3 man rotation. Plus, Shakamak wasn't playing like they have since the Rivet game(possible exception being EMinence). Shakamak will win, but if Shelton and Birch get hot at the same time...who knows?

Clay City vs. Shakamak- Clay City didn't beat Shakamak in a convincing enough fashion for me to think they will win a match-up with a focused Laker group. Lakers will have to play better defense and keep their big man in check. The crowd may be a factor for at least one of the Shakamak boys(CC doesn't give him a good reception when the two teams tangle). Lakers win.

2A Sectional...

Eastern vs. North Knox- Eastern may be on a losing skid, but they are losing to good teams with a lot of upperclassman. North Knox schools have enough talent to make some noise in this sectional...too bad a couple of those boys chose not to play this year. T-Birds win.

South Knox vs. Bloomfield- A clash of wills. Does SOuth Knox force Bloomfield to speed up or does Bloomfield force SK to slow it down. I think Bloomfield will make it close by slowing it down...but it will be in a losing effort. SK wins.

Eastern vs. Linton- Linton could upset the T-Birds, but doubtful. T-Birds win again.

SK vs. Eastern- I think Eastern learns some lessons that propel them into being the favorite for next couple years in this sectional(Linton may have a group that challenges them in a couple years). South Knox wins.

South Knox and Bloomfield will be one of the best sectional games we have seen in a few years. South Knox likes to run and gun, and we all know how Ron McBride likes to control the tempo. I think do not think SK's big guys can step out and guard Bloomfield's. That will be the difference.

-- Posted by hoppie1 on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 9:44 AM

South Knox has plenty of guards. The Lucas kid is as fast with a basketball as anyone around. Should be a very physical game. Most refs let them play in the sectional

-- Posted by mymanmitch on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 11:26 AM

it wouldnt be called march madness without some upsets....good acessment on the eastern greene maybe freezing up playing at home, but I dont think there will be two major upsets in that sectional, it will either come in that game or the bloomfield/south knox game, but not both.

why not pick the bulldogs in the wrv sectional for an upset over clay city. the dawgs could catch them looking past them and catch them off guard.

and lakermom......how do you know that it was miner fans that vandalized the lakers signs????

it is pretty low for ANYONE to do that, but i do not think its fair to accuse people less you are positive.

-- Posted by sparky70 on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 11:27 AM

Lakermom, how do you know it was Linton fans who vandalized signs? I'd want some pretty good evidence before I went accusing others.

-- Posted by ISUgrad06 on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 12:08 PM

Well, the signs were painted with things like "LHS" a "GO MINERS". Do you think another school would do that? I would think Miner Fans would be the only ones to write GO MINERS.

-- Posted by lakermom on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 1:48 PM

If the vandals are NOT Miner Fans, they showed their support for them on the Laker Signs along Lone Tree Road.

-- Posted by lakermom on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 1:51 PM

Dugger beat Clay City at the beginning of the season. Why couldn't they do it again?

-- Posted by EggMan on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 1:59 PM

it can happen but i think they were without their best player #24......but i think this team has underacheived all season and now is as good as time as any to break out, you just never know with 16-18yr old kids

-- Posted by sparky70 on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 2:27 PM

Did they spell Miners correctly?

That could narrow it down to which school did it.

Just wanted to say congrats to the Lakers on their win and also to the Thunderbirds for their win as well. And yes I was wrong on my pick on the T-Birds so congrats once again and good luck to all the teams on Friday night!!

-- Posted by TDavid on Tue, Mar 3, 2009, at 10:22 PM

GO LAKERS!

Friday night at Eastern will be pretty cool.

Full house ,good programs and lots of competiton.

Glad I lived to see Eastern get something

like this. Quite a change from the good ol

days at Bedford where the boys got to dress

in a janitors closet.

Good Luck to all the area teams! A HUGE GOOD LUCK to the Eastern Thunderbirds! Work hard and play as one! Leave it all on the floor! Desire comes from within! You can do it!

Didn't someone question why commenting on the sports columns were not an option. I know why, and everyone else should too. People forget the kids read these comments and people can be very hurtful to the young people. Please remember these are impressionable kids who play sports because they are talented and/or they love it. Not so they can be ridiculed and picked apart in the paper.

Nice call on the Bloomfield/South Knox game.

For the thirtieth time Bloomfield Cardinals are the sectional champs!!!!! Pep Band makes all the difference I think! Where are regionals and is the band going?

-- Posted by Eddy C. on Sun, Mar 8, 2009, at 4:20 PM

wonder where the shakamak band was at last night?

clay city sure did have theirs there loud and proud

-- Posted by sparky70 on Sun, Mar 8, 2009, at 9:11 PM

Not bad Travis... 5 pts from having the perfect picks... Make sure you get me your March Madness picks so I can win the office pool this year.. :) I'll split it with you...

Oh and where's my man now??? :)

-- Posted by Bigballer on Mon, Mar 9, 2009, at 6:44 AM

hey mitch, did you see the cardinals take down the spartans????

-- Posted by sparky70 on Mon, Mar 9, 2009, at 12:15 PM

Sure did. Great game by Bloomfield. I was only right on 2 of 3. I also saw them play and beat Eastern. Who was going to be upset in the first game. I also heard Shakamak lost.

-- Posted by mymanmitch on Mon, Mar 9, 2009, at 3:11 PM

Hey mitch, I told you the difference would be not stepping out and guarding Bloomfield's big guys (Kurt Schulet for 3).

-- Posted by hoppie1 on Tue, Mar 10, 2009, at 7:46 AM

wish i would have seen this before the sectionals.... looks like gcc was the closest here.

i saw the final and it was a great game to watch. close the whole time. congrats to bloomfield but sad to see my tbirds lose.

and edddy c. i think you have a good point. eastern band always misses the 3rd quarter because they are putting their instruments away, so there is less cheering, and the 3rd quarter is often the most important! not to mention that the bloomfield band was in a much much better location than the eastern band. they were crammed into a corner with the drums pretty much underneath the bleachers!

-- Posted by giantdave on Tue, Mar 10, 2009, at 1:53 PM

Bloomfield's band was even directed by a high school senior that night. Not the their actual conductor, Jeff Rockey. The high school student conducted at girls sectionals but that was because of Mr. Rockey's absence but now it has become regular.

BHS band usually misses part of third quarter too but members are told strictly to get their concession items and come back BEFORE the 3rd quarter ends.
