Well let's take a closer look

Posted Friday, June 6, 2008, at 7:38 AM

Well let's take a closer look at some of the bird species at Goose Pond and surrounding areas. Some of this birds are here for some time and others are here for only a short time passing through on their migration route.

The American Bittern: this member of the heron family is a very secretive bird that is more often heard than seen. It blends in with its surroundings. It feeds on fish, frogs, insects and small mammals. It hunts from ambush often standing motionless for long periods waiting for its prey.

The Yellow Crowned Night Heron: This stocky heron with striking yellow head plumage inhabits wooded marshy areas and feeds mainly on crayfish.

The Great Horned Owl: Is the largest of the American (eared) Owls. Which is mainly a night hunter and preys on small to medium size mammals, birds, insects, frogs and snakes. This Owl inhabits forests, swampland and open country.

All of these species can be seen or heard at Goose Pond and surrounding areas.

All of these things and many more make Greene County a great place to be an outdoor enthusiast.
