The Crusty Stuff

Having dinner the other night, my wife says, "This is some good bread." You see, that is how she decides if a restaurant is any good or not. Not the service or how well they cook a steak. The bread. That free stuff every table.

So I ask, "Who has the best bread?"

"Well", she starts, "The Old Band had good bread. Not the stuff they have now, but the old bread. That was some good bread."

"Where else?"

"That Italian restaurant in Bloomington you really liked. The one that but the bread over the candle."

"Uh, Grisanti's?"

"Yeah, that place. Oh, Texas Roadhouse has some great bread. Well, maybe it is just their butter."

"Hmmm", I said. "I figured you would have said some other restaurants."

"Like where? What are your favorites?"

"Well you are always saying how great Dats bread is."

"Oooh, that IS some good bread, and Yats is even better. Their crust is crispier. I like that. That is probably me favorite bread. Where else?"

"St. Elmo's" I said.

"I don't remember."

"Trust me, that was some great bread. I also like Zydeco's baguettes."

"Yeah, but Dats is the best."

Dat's and Yat's both have excellent bread.

i agree that the old bank had good bread the old kind not the new...i absolutely loved it...and i was wondering where is Dat's and Yat's? I i have never heard of them and would love to try there bread:) Also matt I would like to commend you as I always enjoy your blogs...i love to hear your opinion on the food subject as food is my favorite thing:)

Dats is a Cajun/Creole restaurant in Bloomington. It is the yellow house at 4th & Grant.

Yats is a very similar restaurant (as I understand it Dats used to be a Yats, but the owner sold it) that has four locations in Indianapolis.

I should add that I recommend the crawfish etouffee at Dat's.

Yat's has a chicken mauque choux and a spinach-mushroom etouffee that are both outstanding.

fyi, you can purchase the Old Bank's "old bread" at GFS Marketplace in the freezer section

The Pepperoni Grill in Bloomfield has the best homemade yeast rolls I have ever eaten especially when the rolls come right out of the oven. They are delicious.

Rafferty's in Evansville has the BEST honey rolls! so flakey and delicious.
