  • If you look at the monument closely, you can see that the color changes approximately 1/3rd the way up. When I lived there, it was a standing joke to tell visitors that this change of color was due to a horrendous flood of the Potomac at sometime in the past. People would fall for it, despite the fact that a flood of that magnitude would have inundated the entire city, not just part of the monument.
