Brown County case has Greene County connectionPosted Wednesday, November 19, 2008, at 1:13 PM
Hours before I saw a press release about a police investigation into a shooting in northern Brown County last Saturday, I heard the news that Mary and Dude Voland had both been shot by intruders into their home and were in a hospital -- a prayer chain had been activated and my mother had gotten the call.
I had never heard of the Volands but it turned out they were related by a marriage to someone who grew up in Greene County. It's a small world.
The Voland's have a nephew who is married to a girl who grew up and went to school in Worthington. She lived with her younger sister and her parents across the street from the school -- I grew up in the house next door.
Richard "Dude" Voland was 84 years old -- he passed away as a result of a gunshot wound to the head. His wife, Mary, is 77 years old. Mary is still in the hospital -- she is reported to have been shot and stabbed.
According to all the reports, their door was opened to help two males who claimed to have had car trouble.
The latest reports I've seen say Mary was able to describe the two males and a sketch artist is working with her to produce drawings which may help to determine who broke into their home and attacked the couple.
The Indiana State Police have asked anyone with information to contact the ISP at 812-332-4411 or 800-423-1286. The ISP press releases describe the two attackers as one older white male aged 18-20 with dark hair and olive or dark complected skin and one younger white male aged 14-16 with a light complexion and sandy blond or light red hair. Both were clean shaven. The older one might have a wound on one arm.
This is such a terrible tragedy that has befallen this couple, but the heartache caused by events like this reach far beyond the individuals directly involved -- something I wish the perpetrators would think about before they do these things. It's not just the couple they hurt -- many, many more people, family, friends and neighbors, will have their hearts broken and experience extreme emotional distress and fear. In many cases -- lives will be disrupted in ways that are unimaginable to people who have never been through something like this. Things will never be the same.
I hope the police find these two guys. Call them if you have a tip. But then -- it happened way over there in Brown County so nobody over here would know who these two guys are and they probably wouldn't be here in Greene County. Or would they? It is a small world.
