Worthington's fountain bubbling overPosted Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 7:19 AM
The planting of trees and the reinstallation of the fountain were among the last items on the to-do list of the downtown renovation project known as the "Worthington Streetscape." It seemed like it took forever, but finally the trees were planted this spring and the little fountain re-appeared back on the Triangle with a brand new circular catch-pool made of brick. Once the fountain was put back in, there was some kind of problem with a leak that had to be fixed so we had to wait a while to hear the water bubbling but it was flowing in time for the W-J alumni weekend on June 13. Not long after it was back up and running, the bubbling got out of control. The cup runneth over -- some unknown culprit had added soap or bubble bath or something to the water. When the sun shines in the morning, the bubbles kind of dissipate but once the sun goes down, it was looking like someone forgot to turn the water off in the tub for a bubble bath. This incident of "criminal mischief" also happened in time for the alumni weekend. It's been a local whodunit. Traditionally we tend to blame those pesky teenage mischief-makers but in this unsolved case, there are other suspects. Rumor has it that this has happened frequently in years past -- around the time of the alumni get-together. The culprit could very well have been a youngster, but it's being whispered that it's more likely to have been a youngster of a much-older age -- like one in a second childhood. I don't think anyone is searching for fingerprints or conducting interrogations -- it's actually been kind of pretty late in the evening. I didn't do it, but I think it is pretty and wish it was like that all the time. Anybody can have a fountain but not everyone has one with bubbles. Love it!!!
I did not do it this time - I have to confess for once in 1971--- is this past the time limits of arrest??? (Stat of limitations or something like that)I recall Lexie Smith (aka Cigar) was pretty upset that night. Along with many other nights.
Now with me knowing one of the reserve officers very well I must stay out of the County until the Stat of Limitations is clear.
Hey I just thought of this -- I am sure it is the soap in the plumbing lines just getting flushed out ---- (maybe)
