Greene County crime scene has changed since 1984Posted Friday, September 25, 2009, at 6:22 PM
The archive room at the Greene County Daily World is where old, really old, newspapers are kept. The archive room. Sounds like a neat, comfortable library-ish place where a history buff could sit and stay awhile reading lots of juicy tidbits from the Greene County past.
The room is full of juicy tidbits in stacks and stacks of big books going back into the 1930s, but it smells, well, like old newspapers. It's not exactly neat, or comfortable.
In preparation for a story I've got coming up, I needed to look back into some old issues from 1984 so I had to visit the archive room. I didn't sit or stay -- just grabbed the book and left. I like looking back through old issues when I get the chance. I found the stories I was looking for ... and lots of other things.
One story I found interesting was on the local crime and police statistics for 1983 released early in 1984 by the Greene County Sheriff's Department.
Between the GCSD, ISP and police from Bloomfield, Linton, Jasonville, Lyons and Worthington, together they made 113 arrests for driving under the influence, 54 for public intoxication, 23 for illegal consumption, 30 for illegal possession and 21 for driving while intoxicated.
Together they made three arrests for murder, two for attempted suicide, four for assault of an officer, four for battery, two for rape, two for chid molesting and one for criminal deviate conduct.
Other arrests included 68 wanted on warrants, nine burglary, one selling manufactured ID number, one habitual offender, 53 juvenile, 17 driving while suspended, two no license in possession, four possession of marijuana, 17 court order, three receiving stolen property, 13 disorderly conduct, one interfering with law enforcement, eight criminal conversion, two possession of stolen property, five criminal mischief, eight criminal trespass, 12 theft, 15 body attachments, one check deception, two arson, four held for other counties, 12 resisting, one aiding to theft, one false reporting, seven fleeing law enforcement, one contempt of court, one reckless driving, five carrying handgun without permit, one contributing to a minor, five refusal to submit to breathalyzer, one passing forged prescription, one revoke probation, one altering/forged prescription, two cultivating marijuana, two possession of paraphernalia; one possession of scheduled substance, and five criminal confinement.
The sheriff's department investigated 259 auto accidents involving 355 vehicles. There was one traffic fatality and 58 injuries. They also assisted in the investigation of an accident resulted in the deaths of four members of the same family.
Times have changed ... only one arrest for possession of a controlled substance?
