Sanders has 'the knack' with courthouse flower gardenPosted Wednesday, September 8, 2010, at 4:36 PM
It's aging gracefully into the fall. Didn't know there was a courthouse garden? Well, there's not really, not officially anyway, but that's what I call it -- a patch of what looks to be a hundred different kinds of pretty flowers in a rainbow of colors that greets visitors as they walk up to the eastside door. Don't worry about taxpayer expense ... it's the work of one woman with a seriously green thumb, a volunteer offering of beauty in a big block dominated by brick, stone and concrete. She's worked at the courthouse for years, and while she works in her small office (with no windows) inside the probation department, countless visitors walking by, or sitting on the bench during a recess in a trial, notice her flowers and make comments about their beauty. They really have been spectacular this year. She selected and planted the flowers and has been weeding and watering all summer. If you happen to be at the courthouse about quitting time, you might see her. As everyone else is clearing out and heading home, you'll find her carrying a bucket of water down the hall and out the door to splash the thirsty plants. Besides the long stretch of flowers near the bench, which includes a few window boxes with more flowers spilling out, she maintains concrete urns on the walkway at the entrance door -- there are two filled with purple and white flowers this year -- my favorites. The gardener is JeanAnne (Lent) Sanders, an administrative assistant in the juvenile division of the Greene County Probation Department. As garden and decorating people might say, she's got "the knack." Thanks JeanAnne for all your hard work on the little garden. Your flowers have been just beautiful! I've been driving by JeanAnne's house in Worthington for years to admire the beautiful flowers and other decor. Now, I've got my husband going by. It is lovely any time of the year. JeanAnne is a very talented lady!!!
If you haven't been by her house you have missed the prettiest flowers in town.
Thank you JeanAnne....you are finally getting some well deserved appreciation for all your dedication and hard work. My family can also vouch for the superb cook, baker and florist that she is! Thanks again for always being there to lend a hand when needed.
Forgot to mention all of her work with CASA.
JeanAnne's crafty touch is all around, a lot of people just don't know it. She and her husband spend countless hours at the Worthington Park cleaning up. She teaches parenting classes and prepares and provides all the food herself. She truly is a blessing to Greene County and especially Worthington. Thank you.
Very pretty! I wish she'd come to my house next spring and help me out! ;-D
A great green thumb effort!
This reminds me of a local article about the historical tropical plant which grew several years on the east side of the courthouse here.
Someone brought a banana tree home from a vacation in Florida and planted it in the summer sun on the east side of the courthouse decades ago. Each year the person would dig it up and bring it inside for the winter. I believe the story said it thrived fairly well for several years, being an attraction for folks to marvel at while driving by or visiting the building.
