Glenda Murphy was a special lady who helped othersPosted Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at 6:49 PM
Oh, Glenda Murphy. Must we say goodbye?
I didn't know she was ill, but her obituary has appeared in the paper this week, a visitation was scheduled for Wednesday evening at Jenkins Funeral Home in Bloomfield, and there will be a graveside service in her native state of Illinois on Friday.
"She worked as a social worker for the State of Indiana for 38 years."
She was 72 years old when she passed away on Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Indiana University Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis.
She left behind, her husband, children, grandchildren, and family members, and the part that was left out of the obituary -- an unbelievable number of individuals and families that she touched through her work over all those years.
While many obituaries extoll the greatness of those who've gone on, about how they were the grand poobah of this, president of that, on the important board of something or another, Glenda's says simply, "She worked as a social worker for the State of Indiana for 38 years." That's an understatement if ever I saw one.
For those of you who've never ever had to ask for public assistance in Greene County, Glenda's name might not be familiar.
But to those who have, and were lucky enough to have Glenda assigned as their caseworker, Glenda Murphy will not be forgotten.
I'll keep this simple -- she was one very special lady.
I'm not sure there are rewards waiting just because one served on some board, but there surely are many for someone like Glenda, who quietly, without fanfare or special honors, helped others along the way, without passing judgment, and touched life after life after life after life, day after day after day, for 38 years.
Glenda Murphy, rest in peace, and thank you for everything you did for others.
