One vote could make the difference

Posted Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 2:02 PM

The Pepsi Refresh Project gives away $1.3 million in grants each month and Pepsi decides who gets the money through an online voting process.

It's Pepsi's way of distributing millions of dollars to community projects around the country and they accept grant requests from individuals, for-profit organizations and non-profit organizations.

The requests are posted online and anyone can visit the site and vote for their favorites. They also accept votes by text message and they allow voters to vote every day during each one of the rounds.

There are several projects in Indiana that have made a request and are listed in the current round and one of them has a direct connection to Greene County Middle Way House in Bloomington, with a satellite branch in Greene County, was listed in 141st place (out of 300 in the category) in the race for a $250,000 grant. Then votes came rolling in and next time I checked they were in 33rd place, then 26th place and they continue to move up.

Middle Way House, which was started in 1971, provides help to domestic abuse and sexual assault survivors in Greene, Lawrence, Martin, Monroe, Morgan and Owen counties through its emergency shelter, 24-hour crisis line, legal advocacy services, transitional housing, childcare and youth empowerment programs.

To be awarded the money, Middle Way House needs to finish in the top two. If they win, the cash would be used for capital expenses associated with the new shelter's security system, complete outfitting the emergency shelter, invest further in additional solar panels and in a work skills development program for clients.

Yes, the home of Middle Way House is in Bloomington, but they provide much-needed services for abuse victims in Greene County and helping the mothership will have a trickle-down effect on the local program.

You can vote for the Middle Way House project from now through Dec. 31 by visiting www.refresheverything.com and searching for "Middle Way" then hitting the "Vote" button every day. Or you can vote by text by typing the message "104741" and sending it to "73774."

And on another note, it looks like this giveaway project is going to continue, and maybe Greene County should get in on the action. There are all kinds of projects, from playgrounds to police cars to fire stations to library books in the running right now. Maybe there's one Greene Countians could get behind and marshal our forces for everyone to vote and vote and vote and bring some of this money home in one of the next rounds.
