What happened to peaceful transitions?Posted Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at 10:44 AM
In America we regularly have these peaceful transitions of power from one elected official to the next. I hear that phrase frequently during the transitions from one U.S. President to the next on the national level, also when the balance changes in Congress.
It's also the way we do things on the state level, and on down to county and local levels.
Despite the fact that our transitions do not come with a violent physical overthrow but by the ballot box, it doesn't always feel exactly peaceful.
The latest transition in our county seems to have been a bit bumpy.
The Presidential transition between Clinton and Bush was bumpy too, at least that's what was reported in the media. Of course, one side said one thing and the other said another and I'm not sure they ever did determine who was right. Somebody probably studied the matter and issued a report.
At one point when the fingers were pointing back and forth, the White House press secretary was quoted as saying when the Bush administration moved in, the letter "W" had been removed from the keyboards of around 100 computers in the White House and adjacent office buildings.
They also claimed a lot of other damage had been done, but I thought the most creative act was stealing all those "W" keys.
Whether it happened it or not, it's sure to go down in history as a cute urban legend.
But back on the county level, bumpy rides are not so cute. People get hurt.
It's just my opinion, but I think it would be nice if many of our current elected positions were filled by people who have the knowledge, training, skill and experience to do the job rather than their politics.
