Back on the beat, Yoho's in Solsberry, Dutch's Cafe, bobcats, mountain lionsPosted Saturday, December 8, 2012, at 12:29 AM
Dutch's Cafe offered great food at great prices back in the 1950s. Lavon Yoho ran the cafe across the street from the Yoho General Store in downtown Solsberry from the late '40s until the early '60s. The menu board from the cafe now hangs in the newly-renovated store.
This is an addiction. Since I've been gone, I've been taking some classes -- I'll be one of those little old ladies who finally gets a degree at age 88. I learned some new things but I went through withdrawal and really missed newspapering. I thank my editor Chris Pruett for opening this door for me to get back to work.
It wasn't the news I missed so much -- it was the people, all you people. I had the opportunity to go to a different community and do the same job, but this is home, for several generations of my family, and there really wasn't anywhere else I'd rather be. Greene County's been good to me and getting to work in a job where I meet and greet all of you and listen to the stories you tell, I am blessed.
Just like last Saturday, I went to Solsberry for the reopening of the Yoho General Store. I met a new deputy, took a picture of the Cooks helping to cut the ribbon, chatted with the top guy at CFC, ran into Leon Allen, talked to the Wheelocks -- hadn't seen them for a long time, listened to a guy from Bloomington tell me about how his grandpa helped make the Liar's Bench, and got to share what was a very special day for Lavon Yoho. He told me about the time he used to run a café in Solsberry -- his menu board now hangs in the general store. I snapped a picture of it -- can you believe those 1950s prices? Ah, the good old days. And this is work? I'll take it, and hope to be doing this for a long time to come.
No two days are the same in this job. Every day brings something new. Getting on to the next thing, a guy who owns some property near Worthington sent me a couple of pictures of bobcats -- good pictures taken in a woodsy area west of town off State Road 48. I showed them to a conservation officer and he confirmed they are bobcats. He said there are a lot more of them around these days. But I have a question of you... someone says they are certain they saw a mountain lion, some people would call it a cougar, in this same area. Now that's a much different story -- a much bigger cat, and one that's less likely to be around. Is there a mountain lion around? Who says yes? Have you seen it? Where? Got a picture?

My column is scheduled to be in the paper on Saturdays. So until the next one, hope you all have a great week.
