Conservatives in this country go by the mantra "Government governs best when it governs least." They live by the notion that individuality is the true realm of freedom. With that in mind, I have a few questions for them.
If you are so concerned about small government, then why do you call on the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn the Roe, Doe, Weber, and Casey decisions on abortion when you could urge women not to get one? Furthermore, why do conservatives oppose same sex marriage? Is D.O.M.A. not a violation of state's rights? If it is all about the individual, why do you oppose domestic terrorism? Is that not what Thomas Jefferson called for? Why are you upset at the White House with the BP oil spill? Is it not just the happenings of the oil business? Why do you make any purchases at stores, instead of making your own food, clothes, shoes, etc.? Does your mantra not call upon pulling yourself up by the bootstraps? Why do you make more of a deal out of electing the president than the county commissioner? If the TEA Party is against public funding for, well, anything, can they at least leave the libraries? Obviously they would not be found in one but think of the future! Also, why were you not upset with the P.A.T.R.I.O.T and No Child Left Behind Acts? Oh I know, it was because a Republican Congress and President passed and signed it into law. Why did I ask that question? Think about those questions, will you? Oh and when you do, please keep in mind the text from the Preamble to the Constitution. We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. Wow. Some political crazies have sure come out of the woodwork to "comment" (rant) on this particular simplistic, generalized blog ... Drew sure has y'all wrapped around his little finger. Just what he likes!
Why fall for it? Wait for something with more meat on the bones. If we're stingy with our comments perhaps he'll read, think and muture, and write something of value worth commenting on.
I'll shop around for some adult subject matter I think.

And to people bragging about the tea party - it really isn't that big of a movement. It just get a lot of press. Liberals cheering for equal rights isn't a good story, you see, so the media runs with the extremists carrying racist signs and spouting off about a fabricated story about a birth certificate. It's tabloid. And the tea partiers themselves always lie about the numbers of people who show up at all the events. I've been to them. There is usually a crowd of the same white people who were at the other tea party gatherings or trolls. We held an actual tea party at the last rally, and it was a rather nice time. And it drove the real tea partiers insane which was a bonus.
And, if you may think that bias in the press is something new - try reading some of the political editorials and cartoons from the election of 1800.
The press will always, always, always have bias. If you are expecting a press with no bias, no leanings whatsoever, you will always be disappointed. Even those journalists who profess no bias, still have a bias to some degreee, even if they are not aware of it.
This is the precise reason why the press has to remain "free and unrestrained." Otherwise, you can end up with regulation that tries to eliminate the bias, regulation that would contain the bias of the legislators themselves. This is known as censorship.
It is the task of the reader to educate himself to the point that he is aware of the bias and the extent of it and knows enough to continue his research until he believes he has assembled the facts. This task, of course, is affected by his bias as well.
And, Drew, your blogs are not meaningless trash .... of course, that is just my bias speaking.

I do not think you will make anything of yourself buy having tunnel vision. and biased opinion. there are many ways to solve the same problem, just ask your neighbor, friend, family and your in-laws. you will have more than one solution...

Roundup is about the same salt concentration as table salt and is inert in animals. However, I certainnly would not want to drink Round-up if I had high blood pressure, which I probably do. :-0
Kool-aid is much healthier for you than drinking round-up.
I should have pointed out in my post above that this is not about placing blame -- there is plenty of that to go around on both sides of the aisle. It is about sustainability, as Sasha points out -- we are not in a sustainable survival curve for our way of life and method of government.
We can argue for days and days about where the finger of blame should be pointed, and we will simply still end up where we started -- in debt with no foreseeable solution (other than bankruptcy).
England and Germany have recently announced drastic spending cuts to try to get their spiralling debts under control. And, their debt ratio is not as bad as ours.
Sure, Obama inherited a skyrocketing national debt, but he then put it on steroids even before his party passed a brand new national entitlement for which we have no practical way to pay for.
Republicans have cut taxes and cut taxes while sitting back and watching the deficit go into orbit, with some faint hope that increased production will bring in the needed revenue to rein it in under control. That didn't work either, and there is no reason to suspect it will work in the future, TEA party or no.
We need a comprehensive two party solution to the crisis before it envelopes us and gets completely out of control. Perhaps it is already too late. It is the 800-lb gorilla in the room that no-one wants to talk about, but it is the thing that can consume our government and create radical and unwanted changes. Not only for us, either, if our economy collapses, then Europe and Japan will soon follow.
In truth, both parties are full of career politicians who won't touch the subject at all for fear of losing their political lives. Dems appeal to the "gimme my free stuff" crowd, and Repubs try to appease the "no taxation without ... well, just no taxation, please" bunch. Neither approach will get us out of this mess.
As Cow Rancher has pointed out, the debt is $180,000 for every person in the country, and increasing exponentially.
Even if every budget from here on out is balanced (no deficit, but no surplus either) the interest alone will cause it to continue to spiral upwards and consume us!
Obama has created a commission to look into the debt. Well, excuse me, but no commission is necessary for us to know that we will need to make some hard, hard choices to get out:
1.) Decrease spending
2.) Increase revenue
These are the same choices every American family has to make when looking at their paychecks and stack of bills.
I usually enjoy reading Mr. Landry's blogs--though I don't agree with them for the most part. But this one is so full of outrageous generalizations that I really can't take it seriously. Surely he doesn't really believe all that. I can only hope these gross exagerations were a failed attempt to get his point across?

Why is Reagan a sacred cow? Great actor, but he ran up debt with the best of them. He is along the same lines as some of the very Democrats that are villified.
Unfortunately there is a lot of truth to the fact that nobody is really willing to do what it will take to get out of debt...sure everybody talks about not spending and lowering taxes...blah blah blah. Nobody is saying you and your family will live with less for the next few generations. It will get a lot worse before it gets better(that is if revolution doesn't come knocking again...seems to happen when things start going bad). A lot of talk about different plans...nothing about the consequences.
As much as everyone whines and complains about FDR...what happens if he doesn't come into control. What if Hoover wins another election and just leaves everything alone...do we bounce back? Same could be said for now. Nobody knows for sure the consequences of allowing these big money businesses to fail. I have a hard time believing the effects wouldn't be a domino effect that could last for decades. Maybe we come back stronger...maybe we don't come back? Hindsight is 20/20.

Now we are reaping what has been sown.
Thankfully we (the Tea Party and other independents) are drinking Roundup and will kill your crop in Novemeber. You , however, keep on drinking the Kool-aid.

The blame is on YOU and those who constantly supports the clowns in power who are spending our grandchildren's money. Our national debt is rapidly approaching our Gross Domestic Product. In words that you could understand, that means that this administration is spending more than we can possibly make in a year.
The total debt per person in the US is now $180,000.00. You can't blame that on Bush or Reagan. Every baby born tomorrow (that hasn't been aborted) will owe that much to the US the day they are born. As Obama bragged yesterday, "the buck stops here." What a profound statement in retrospect.

Drew, I consider myself a fiscal conservative and as such, I didn't see that any of your bull-bait questions above actually applied to me.
But, I have one for you and others: How long do you think that the present government of this country can survive with the present debt load (along with predicted increases) it is carrying?
Another way of looking at this might be, "How can a bankrupt government ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, and promote the general Welfare?"
Examples of bankrupt governments creating hyper inflation and resulting chaos abound in history.

As a much as I disagree with the way Drew wrote this blog, I agree with his points. And I side with GCC that it is ironic that the posters are complaining about generalizations, but what do I know? I'm a socialist, uneducated liberal. I would make a solid argument that a lot of the grief that Obama has taken from the populace has happened because on many issues he has moved too far to the right in an attempt to be a centrist president. Conservatives will argue with me on that one. I would characterized Conservative thought as an attempt to preserve tradition. It's a fairly nice idea, but unrealistic in the changing world. Progressivism is the way to go, and contrary to the prediction of a conservative resurgence in the coming years, I believe America will grow more progressive electing more progressive candidates.

By the way, Rand Paul is not the leader of the TEA party. He only said the TEA party got him elected.
The leader of the TEA party is the American voter who desires more personal freedom, less government, lower taxes, a strong military and Constitutional Conservatism.

This is the Libertarian point of view, but I would not paint all those who consider themselves as conservatives with that broad of a brush.
Taking the above mantra to the extreme would result in no government at all, which is not the goal of conservatives in general. Basing this blog on such a generalization makes all the conclusions driven from this point of view rather suspect.

They may be generalizations...but isn't that what people do in regards to Democrats. According to many on this blog, Democrats are socialist, baby killing, enemies of the bible, America...and even apple pie.
This is where the TEA party is missing the boat right along with the Republicans and Democrats. Too much finger pointing and generalizations. The Republicans that have infiltrated the TEA party have brought some of there big party tricks.
I will admit that Obama has swayed away from where I believe the American people want. I believe the Ellsworths, Shulers, and other middle of the road Democrats are what people wanted in 2008. They didn't want more Pelosi and Reid. Just like when the pendelum swings back toward the right...I don't think the majority want super conservatives...I'm still unsure of how the TEA party will effect the coming elections. I see too many conservatives jumping that bandwagon. What may have begun as something far different from the left or right...could be nothing more than a tool to swing the pendelum. Time will tell.
I agree with John. To make generalizations and slams is a dissappointment. Why don't you spend a few weeks (months) writing about the weaknesses of this current administration and how America is falling apart at the seams.
I am getting sick of hearing democrats blame G.W. for their own lack of action (latest example is Paul McCartney and Jerry Seinfeld at Obama's party this week. It is time for Obama, Reid and Pelosi to take accountability for their incredible inadequacies in governing. If they don't now, then they will in November, I guarantee it. It is also about time that you Kool-aid drinkers admit that you are wrong about some things as well.
The Tea Party movement knows they are human, admit the problems and solve the problems at hand.
I especially like the suggestion of Mark Simone to use "only" $4 billion of the stimulus money to build a fence completely across the border of the U.S. and Mexico. It's shovel ready (another one of Obama's promises for stimulus money), it shuts off the border and it would employ thousands of workers.
Unfortunately, the right won't go for it as they love the cheap labor...the left won't go for it because they think they can dupe the hispanics to vote democrat.
It's time to take a realistic approach to governing based on the Constitution (and not around it). I am all for immigration, legally. If someone is here illegally, then deport them or throw them in jail. Let's adopt Mexico's immigration policy and incarcerate for a minimum of 6 months.
