An important part of staying competitive in today's job market is keeping your skills current. But if time and money are tight, how do you access training to enhance the skills you can offer to an employer without breaking the bank or disrupting your schedule?

If you are looking to upgrade your skills -- or those of your employees -- we offer a solution here at WorkOne. It's called MindLeaders, and it's an e-learning program available to all learners in our community. WorkOne will provide the license to access MindLeaders at no cost to you. It's ready when you are -- you can access MindLeaders 24 hours a day, seven days a week; all you need is an Internet connection. And if you don't have one at home, you can access MindLeaders at the computers in WorkOne's Information Resource Area.

The state of Indiana has given us the ability to grant a free license to learners who would like to improve their skills. Requirements for a license are registration at the WorkOne office (about 30 minutes) and active use of the MindLeaders program within 30 days of being granted a license. If you're already registered with WorkOne, we can even get you signed up by phone.

Course offerings include everything from basic computer programs such as Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook (the most commonly used programs) to specialized business courses such as Customer Service, Business Presentations and Six Sigma. Courses are delivered by multi-step simulations and by scenario-based streaming video to build core business competencies. Book marking automatically tracks your progress in a course, so if you need to exit the lesson and resume at a later time, it will pick up where you left off.

If you're a business owner or manager, your employees can access and use MindLeaders from their office, depending on your company's computer use rules. It's self-paced and there is an assessment at the end of each module, so MindLeaders can be used these as a part of an employee's continuing education or continuous improvement plan. One immediate way that MindLeaders can be useful is if you are upgrading from Microsoft Office 2003 to Microsoft Office 2007; there are many differences in the two programs and MindLeaders can guide your employees through the learning process without a large investment of money or time. MindLeaders is valuable for everyone: job seekers, students and employers. Lifelong learning is the hallmark of the 21st century workforce, and MindLeaders provides an easy and stimulating way to keep your skills fresh and your mind active.

You can learn more about the course offerings by going to http://www.mindleaders.com and clicking on the link marked "Course Catalogue". To get signed up with a MindLeaders license, call or come to the WorkOne office in Linton; our number is 847-4479.

What a wonderful wonderful opportunity.

This is a great idea for a blog! Now, we can all learn what opportunities are available for training, upgrading skills, and finding a better paying job or a new job.

Thank you! Please continue to provide information about these kinds of opportunities.

Question to Valerie: Does the Life Sciences department at Ivy Tech (or other colleges) still offer training for free for jobs in the medical sciences like Boston Scientific and Cooks?

About two years ago, I learned that there was a program, supported financially by the State of Indiana and several other entities, that covered the costs of an initial evaluation and then introductory classes to become marketable to those companies in Bloomington's medical sciences (high tech medical devices manufacturing) companies. Hoping there are still opportunities.

Greenee:

The programs (HIRE, BMTC, MRC and Managing in the Life Sciences) ended in June of this year. They were funded out of a special grant (Strategic Skills Initiative). Some of the training still exists and is available through Ivy Tech in Bloomington. You might be eligible for funding for this training through our regular enrollment process at the WorkOne and an identified need for training. Also, our region is looking at some additional training funds through other grants and more might be available in the near future. Check in with WorkOne and the DWD website (www.in.gov/dwd) to learn about new opportunities.

Thank you Valerie! I was thinking that folks who are having trouble finding good paying jobs could take some time to add to their skill sets and really have a chance to decide whether high tech medical device manufacturing is something they would like to do.

I know those jobs pay better than many others locally and offer benefits.

I've heard of people "dumbing down" their resume so it doesn't appear they're over-qualified. In the end I guess you need to know what the employer is looking for and conform to that.

If you have a doctorate but wanna drop fries at McDonald's, fine by me, unless by earning the degree you forgot how to cook fries.

I posted that last comment under the wrong entry. I meant to post it under "Today's job seekers must be prepared"
