Is it baseball season yet ? Go Cubs!Posted Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at 4:14 PM
For this Chicago Cubs fan, there's nothing like a little bit of Cubbie news to turn a bad day into a good one.
Today's good news came in the form of a counter on the Cubs Web site telling me pitchers and catchers will report to spring training in seven days!
As pathetic as that may be, it's exciting news to me. I've been a Cubs fan for as long as I can remember. As a young girl, I remember watching games broadcast by Harry Caray and Steve Stone on WGN with my great-grandpa Harry Fougerousse. The first time I heard Caray broadcast, as crazy as he might have been, I was hooked. I loved listening to him and even laughing at his slip ups. He was definitely one of a kind.
Sadly, I never made it to Wrigley Field to hear him sing "Take Me out to the Ballgame" in person. My first trip to Chicago was the season after he had passed away.
However, my favorite broadcaster was incorporated into a trip I took to Chicago in 2002. My husband drove me to Chicago that year, got down on one knee, and asked me to be his wife in front of a statue of Caray just outside of Wrigley Field. Many women would be appalled at the thought of getting engaged that way, but for me, it was perfect. To solidify my love for the Cubs, my first born son is named Wrigley.
Another bit of Cubs news to make me happy -- single season tickets go on sale Feb. 19. Now, to figure out what games I want to try to get tickets for ...
On another baseball note, a big congratulations to Shakamak senior TJ Hill. Hill recently signed to play baseball for Olney Central.
I've had the pleasure of watching Hill play baseball for several years for the Lakers and am sure he'll be a great asset to Olney Central. Good luck, TJ!
