Shakamak to host Battle of the LegendsPosted Sunday, October 17, 2010, at 8:28 PM
To help the Shakamak Lakers kick off the 2010-2011 basketball season, the Shakamak High School cheerleaders will be sponsoring an alumni basketball tournament at 6 p.m. on Nov. 13.
The "Battle of the Legends" alumni basketball tournament serves as a fundraiser for the cheerleaders and is open to formers boys varsity, junior varsity, and freshman basketball players.
The tournament will consist of three games with 10 minute halves. Teams will be divided after all entries are received. There is a $10 entry fee, which includes a t-shirt.
This is the second year for the event.
"Last year was the first year and we had about 16 players total and two former coaches, Max Dean and Gary Johnson," Lori Miller, who serves as cheer sponsor, explainsed. "The gym was about half full of spectators, so we had a pretty good first year. (Former superintendent) Mr. (Don) Wells tossed the ball up for the first jump ball to begin the game."
Miller said the event is more than a fundraiser.
"More importantly it is a time for friends to see one another again, doing something they enjoyed in high school. One advantage of being from a small school is the friendships that are developed and remain throughout your lifetime. This is just one way to rekindle those friendships," Miller said. "It is also a time for the upcoming girls and boys basketball teams to be introduced to the public and to show this year's team that past teams support them and wish them luck in the upcoming season. Sort of 'passing the torch' if you will."
Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $3 for students. Children 5 and under are free.
Entry forms can be downloaded from the school's web site -- www.shakamak.k12.in.us . Entries must be postmarked by Oct. 25.
