Vandals strike Harry's statue in ChicagoPosted Wednesday, February 9, 2011, at 3:51 PM
While recently reading sports headlines, I found out that vandals have stuck one of my favorites spots in Chicago.
According to Chicago Cubs spokesman Peter Chase, the statue of legendary Cubs broadcaster Harry Caray has been vandalized. Chase said most of the white spray paint that had appeared on the statue Sunday had been removed. The graffiti said "Sox" and a second illegible word. It's not the first time the statue has been vandalized. In October 2007, Chicago police removed a dead goat carcass found hanging around it. The statue previously was at Sheffield Avenue and Addison Street. But it was moved to make room for a new statue of Cubs Hall of Famer Billy Williams. Now the Harry Caray statue is outside the entrance to Wrigley Field's bleachers. It was rededicated at the spot in September. The Harry Caray statue is very important to me as my husband proposed to me in front of it in 2002. It's always on the list of places to stop when my family and I are in Chicago. Just a few years ago, my husband and I were able to take our children there and show them where we were engaged. Vandalism just plain aggravates me. What's the point of defacing property? I just don't understand why people do it. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
