Thank you Granny and PapawPosted Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at 11:02 AM
50 years. 600 months. 2,600 weeks. 18,250 days.
This week, my grandparents -- Larry and Pat Fougerousse -- will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.
What am amazing milestone. With today's high divorce date, it's refreshing to see couple married for so many years.
Granny and Papaw, individually and in their marriage, are such wonderful role models to me in my personal life as well as my married life. They are such loving, caring people who have instilled the importance of love and family into their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. They've always set such a wonderful example of how God intended marriage to be. They're devoted to each other with the Lord No. 1 in their lives.
In the last couple of years, Granny and Papaw have experienced the whole "through sickness and health" part of the marriage vows as both have battled cancer. It was rough on both of them, but at times I think it was worse for them to see the other one fighting the horrible disease than it was to fight it themselves. Praise the Lord, both of them have fought cancer and are going great.
My parents divorced when I was in second grade, so I always turned to my Granny and Papaw (as well as my Mamaw Naomi and Papaw Claude Thomas Jr. who have been married 56 years!) as my examples of marriage. God truly blessed me with awesome examples.
Granny is my rock, my best friend. I honestly don't know what I'd do without her. I turn to her for support, advice, encouragement, a shoulder to cry on -- pretty much everything! My day isn't complete without talking to or texting Granny. If I can be half the woman my Granny is, I will consider myself a success. She truly is my hero.
Papaw is my prince, my knight in shining armor. He's always been such a great Christian role model for me and my family. He's such a strong man on the outside, but a major softie inside. He's always spoiling the grandkids and great-grandkids. I can't complain, I was and still am on the receiving end of his spoiling. I'll never be too old to be Papaw's girl.
Since both of them are such family people, we'll celebrate this weekend (about 30 of us counting kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids) with a nice dinner out. We'll follow up (weather permitting) with a trip to the park. One of Papaw's favorites things is to take the kids to play at the park. For Granny and Papaw, I'm not sure there is anything better than a day spent surrounded by loved ones.
Happy 50th Anniversary, Granny and Papaw. You both are such an inspiration to me and have molded and shaped me in so many ways. I wouldn't be the person I am today -- especially the wife and mother -- without the two of you. You both have always given me your love and support, and for that, I will forever be grateful. I love you both!
