Great job Patti!!Posted Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at 11:24 AM
This week was Linton Mayor Patti Jones' final regular meeting leading the city of Linton. She will soon pass the reigns of the city to John Wilkes.
When former Linton Mayor Tom Jones passed away unexpectedly in March, many wondered who would step in and fill his shoes. I remember wondering to myself and talking to my husband about the prospect of Patti filling out Tom's term. Tom worked so hard for the city of Linton, I thought it was fitting that his wife, who understood more than anyone the love and passion he had for the community, assume the role.
While working as a full-time staff writer at the Greene County Daily World, Tom became a daily contact as I was assigned to cover the city of Linton. I'd proud to say Tom was a friend of mine -- and I am proud to say the same about Patti.
I learned many things from Tom regarding city business, but by his example, I also learned many life lessons. He taught me to stand up for what was right, always. I saw Tom stand up for what he believed was right regardless of what others thought. He taught me the importance of a selfless leader. He made decisions based on what was best for the city of Linton, even when those decisions weren't popular. He put the city and its residents first.
Even though I do not cover the city of Linton anymore, I have also learned life lessons from Patti. I have always known Patti to be a strong woman. She fought breast cancer, stood by her husband's side while he ran the city, raised two amazing daughters (while having step-daughters and grandchildren living outside of Greene County), and more during the first years that I knew her. I have always admired her strength. She is truly amazing person and leader.
To Mayor Patti Jones, I'd like to say thank you for taking over our city during a very difficult time in your life. I believe you have made decisions based on what you feel is best for the city and its residents -- just as Tom did. Thanks to you and Tom, Linton is a great place to live, work, and raise a family. I am proud of the job you have done, my friend, and I know Tom would be, too.
