Coming to a Community Near You?Posted Tuesday, January 19, 2010, at 2:39 PM
What's in store for Greene County this year? Probably not millions of jobs, although our prospects for the coming years are probably better than they have ever been because of Bear Run Mine, Edwardsport Clean Coal Facility, breaking ground on Phase 2 of I-69 through Greene County, and the ongoing development at Westgate @ Crane. We are definitely beginning to see some added foot traffic in some of our businesses, even despite the recession. But what else...what's next?
Each year I am always surprised by the number of events held throughout our county. Once I hear of them, I often try to attend. Once I get there, I ask, "So, how long has this been going on?" Much to my amazement, I often hear 5, 10, 20, and even 30 years. My question is...why haven't more people heard about these events? Who was in charge of marketing? How in the world are people going to know that something is going on if no one tells anyone? I am a regular reader of the Community Notes section and keep track on my Outlook calendar what's going on in Greene County, as well as other events throughout the state, in the event I decide that I have time to attend. But, what about you whose events never make it to community notes? Were you expecting people to be mind readers? As I work with communities across the state, I often tell them, "You need to toot your own horn because no one is going to do it for you!" If your community has something to offer, then you need to let people know. Likewise, if your organization, church, or community group is planning an event, then you need to spread the word. I thought that this was an understood practice, but apparently not. Well, we all see what happens when you assume? Nobody shows up. Good Luck to all event planners across our fine county, don't forget to tell me about it. I would be happy to hear about your event. And, I just might show up, so share them with me by commenting on my blog for all the world to see. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |
