A writer's wish list for springPosted Wednesday, March 17, 2010, at 2:30 PM
Well with the warmer air on the way and the spring sports season fast approaching, I decided for this week's entry I would make a wish list for spring.
First of all, I wish that the weather would hold and remain good so that every outdoor sport scheduled can be played when it's planned -- and not when the rain will allow.
Second, I hope that all of the area teams have winning seasons. There's nothing more disappointing for fans, players and those of us who cover them to see a team struggle.
Not only does it make the season long for the participants and fans, but it also makes for sad stories.
Next, I'd like to see at least one of the area teams make a run to the state finals.
I've only had the chance to cover a team in the state finals once as of this writing. That came in 2006 when the LadyBirds of North Central came up short in the semifinals when I worked at another publication.
I'd like to see some personal or team records broken. Nothing is better for fans or players to see one of their teams or athletes establish themselves in a historical manner.
I'd like to see all of the coaches find a way to get that extra something from their players. That extra something that ultimately leads to an exciting win or an electrifying comeback.
I'd also like to see all of the coaches find a way to keep the player or team that is on the brink of struggling, from doing that. And instead shake off the struggles and move forward in a positive way.
On a little less serious note, I'd like not to see any games go longer than regulation. Not only does it make the job of writting of a story more difficult, it also makes the writer have to think more.
I'd also like for someone to explain to me why the Greene County legal system won't allow a Shakamak baseball game to start before 7 p.m., I think that's something that eluded my predecessor Travis David.
I have nothing against games that start after dark, but It certainly would make hitting deadline a little easier, or so I'm told.
And lastly, I'd like for the dreams, hopes and wishes of every coach, player, fan and interested bystander to be fullfilled this season, even if it means that we have five state champions from the area and no team loses. (Hey, it's a wish list, all right?).
Well that' it for now, I hope your spring wishes all are fullfilled and that you enjoy the coming warm weather and related sports.
