Stepping further into the 21st century is a new trick

Posted Thursday, August 12, 2010, at 8:25 PM

I guess even old dogs can learn new tricks.

And before anyone who knows me personally makes any cracks about that lede, just remember for many, many years I resisted the temptation to step into the digital age.

Up until recently, the farthest I had stepped into the latest technology was when I got a satellite dish so I could watch sports as home -- and even that went by the wayside when a conflict with the service provider resulted in my calling them and canceling service and removing all the remnants from my yard.

But that's another story for another time.

Back to the matter at hand.

I recently went so far as to add Skype to my ipod touch and twitter. Yes, the old sports writer has become a tweeter.

Before you make fun of me further, just think about it for a moment. I can now keep my finger on the pulse of the sports world with just one swipe of my finger.

I can get the latest trade rumors, scoring updates and maybe most importantly, I can now pass along instantly my many random thoughts on a certain situation as well as what's happening on the Greene County sports scene in just a matter of a few moments -- however long it takes to write 140 letters on my ipod.

So one could infer from this writing that this is a personal invitation to follow me on twitter, along with the 11 other people who have deemed me worthy of following.

That's something that I don't really understand, but hey I'm game. There's this one person that speaks and tweets in only what I think is Russian that follows me for some reason, maybe it's a Russian-thing.

With that aside, I also find myself being followed by some group in Los Angeles. They apparently follow different sports writers across the country in various markets. So I guess I should feel included.

For those of you interested my twitter name is sptswrtrrick and as far as I know I'm the only member of the Greene County Daily World staff that actually twitters actively. I hear from reliable sources that there's a couple of people in other departments that have accounts but don't use them.

So consider this your personal invitation to see what I'm tweeting and maybe we can all enter into the 21st century together.

There's a couple of things that I will offer to you besides my wit and wisdom, if you follow me, I'll follow you.

Second, if you follow me I'll try to keep you updated on what's going on in the sports department here at the paper and last but not least, I'll try not to bore you.

Rick is a sports writer for the Greene County Daily World. He can be reached by telephone at (812) 847-4487 or by E-mail at gcdailyworld.com.
