Tough Start, Better Finish at the Saluki Invitational

Posted Wednesday, March 31, 2010, at 7:50 AM

Golf is a funny game. An entire team of great golfers can all play well on the same day and break school records, or the same group of golfers can play poorly on the same day. Unfortunately, the latter is what happened this past weekend. Sunday's opening round at the Southern Illinois Saluki Invitational was not our best effort.

Shooting a season high 323, at Hickory Ridge golf course, we dug ourselves a hole heading into the final round Monday. Individual scores were as follows: Brittany 79, Kristtini 80, Kirsty 82, Katie 82, Rachael 83, Autumn 94, and Chantelle 89. The tournament format was 6 count 4 and Chantelle was competing as an individual.

Heading into Monday's final round, we were in 6th place. Our goal was to put Sunday's rounds behind us and push forward. We knew a solid round in the low 300s would move us up the leader board significantly.

With three of us shooting 76 (Me, Kristtini, and Brittany) and Katie shooting 81, we did just that. A team score of 309 was good enough to move us into 3rd place behind winners Indiana State University and second place Drake University.

Kirsty fired 82, Chantelle shot 87, and Autumn 91 in their final rounds.

Although we were disappointed in our-first round performance, we showed great drive and competitiveness to come back the next day and play well.

Now we have about 10 days to practice for our next event, the Indiana University Invitational April 10th and 11th. We will be playing 36-holes the first day and 18 the second at the IU Public golf course.

It's not very often we play over a weekend. This means we will only miss Friday classes for the practice round. Being in class is very important this time of year; finals are just around the corner.

Also, since we are playing over the weekend more spectators will hopefully be able to come watch. I will update you with tee times (or shotgun time) as I find out myself!
