Team and Pruett in 2nd Place at MAC Championship

Posted Friday, April 23, 2010, at 6:08 PM

A little rain didn't stop the Mid American Conference Championship from getting under way today. First round play began this morning at The Hawthorns in Fishers, Indiana.

We posted a very solid round of 301 as a team, and are four strokes behind the leading team (Kent State University). This puts us in a really good position for the next two days.

I lead the team with an even par 72, Brittany and Kirsty had solid rounds of 76, Kristtini fired a 77, and Katie finished with an 84.

I am currently tied for 2nd place, but there is still a lot of golf to be played. I am sticking to my game plan from today, "hit fairways and greens, pars are good!" Slow and steady wins the race.

Last season while in Rio Verde, AZ, we had a guest speaker after our practice round. Women's golf legend Kathy Witworth spoke to us. She made a statement that has stuck with my teammates and I since that day. Witworth said, "You can't win a tournament on the first day, but you can lose it." That sentence speaks volumes to me. It's important to keep in mind that shooting a good score is important in the first round, but that an OK round isn't the end of the world. There is still time to make up for an OK round.

We've put ourselves in perfect position after the first day. Tomorrow is about maintaining that position and possibly even improving it. We've talked about playing one shot at time and one round at a time all year. Now it's time to accomplish just that. Today is over, and now it's time to focus on tomorrow.

But now it's about time to head to dinner. We also get a little break from golf as we practice our dance routine for the MAC banquet tomorrow! (Teams were asked to perform a skit. Of course we accepted! Any chance to have some fun and dance!)
