SILENCE IS GOLDENPosted Friday, June 25, 2010, at 8:07 AM
I was reminded of this phrase recently. I did a little research on it and was surprised to find that the original phrase has been reported to be: "speech is silver; silence is golden."
I believe this statement to be true. I find it interesting to watch others that are in a conversation. It seems to me that there are two basic kinds of people in a conversation. The ones that are listening, or the ones that are waiting for their turn to speak. I sometimes catch myself being the latter. While another is speaking I am formulating what I want to say next, instead of listening. I make a conscious effort to not do this. I don't always succeed, however I find when I do, conversations take on a better feel. I would challenge all to attempt to become better listeners. One thing, when I am being a good listener, I try to do, is not just listen to the words, but ask myself what is the speaker feeling, not just saying. While I do feel that I need to practice this rule, I do not feel it is a universal maxim. I am reminded of this statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemoller: "First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a communist; Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a socialist; Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a trade unionist; Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-- because I was not a Jew; Then they came for me-- and there was no one left to speak out for me." While I feel being silent is not always the best case, many including myself would be better off practicing it more. With these thoughts in mind, this will be my last Blog. I have found this exercise very eye opening. I am surprised at how many people have felt so strongly about not only the topics, but about me personally because of my writings. I have received many attaboys. I also have received negative personal response. I would like to express my most sincere apologies to anyone that I may have offended. I only was trying to entertain while maybe exploring a few topics. If anyone took myself or any of my words negatively, I hope you will accept my sincerest apology. Thank you for your time. John, I have enjoyed your blogs even though I may not have always agreed with you on a few topics. Sorry to see you go.
Remember though we should all be better listeners but that doesn't mean we need to listen to those that choose to be negative and make personal attacks. Good Luck and best wishes.
SILENCE IS GOLDEN-----DUCT TAPE IS SILVER
I agree with Eastern Greene Mom! We will miss your thoughts!
You just wrote the best blog ever!! Don't stop now. Remember what Eleanor Roosevelt once said -- "Do what you feel in your heart to be right. You'll be criticized anyway."
John:
Sorry that you are calling it quits. You have opinions, but you are also open minded to the arguments of those who have different opinions. I greatly respect that.
To those who have persuaded you to stop, who write rude anonymous notes to those who write letters to the editor, etc., I have very little respect.
I have enjoyed reading your topics, very interesting.
I hate it that there are people who are so narrow minded and who think they are the only existance on this planet, and their opinion are the only ones. to those of you who have wrote the "nasty-grams" shame on you! I have appreciated hearing the different opinions, I thought that was what this was all about was hearing the differences of opinion.
I hope one day you will take this back up John because you have a real nack for it!
I kinda enjoyed seeing the holier than thou's get riled, and also wondered, what are you thinking person! it kinda shows that they have a little more growth to do in their own path to righteousness... just as we all do.
We never stop learning, when we do.... we are dead....
Silence is not always golden. . . sometimes it's yellow.
Nick's statement is 100% fact. I quit because I just don't have the time. To tell you the truth I don't mind the negative feedback and the positive makes me feel uncomfortable. My comments about the feedback were only noting my surprise at the emotions I "invoked".
I also enjoyed the provocation of thought. I am a believer in freedom of speech and Constitutional limits on the federal government. To limit our freedom and the expansion of federal power is exactly what this current administration is all about.
John, maybe when you get the time, you'll pop back on here.
John, your open mind is very much like the independents in the TEA Party. Come join us on August 28 in Washington D.C. at the Lincoln Memorial.
Thank you for the time you did expend.
Don't forget to eat lots and lots of beef!
GO MEAT!
The TEA party population has been polled and consist of 57% Republicans and 41% Democrats and Independents (that's where I fall). http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/poll...
We are against this current deficit spending, the socialist programs , ridiculus lack of leadership across the board and for a conservative interpretation of the Constitution.
We are open minded as we will look at all candidates from square one, then decide who will will support whether they are democrat, libertarian, or republican.
It's great that you deny the influence of our group. You are a lot like Pelosi calling us astroturf.
Until this group of clowns took over, I never went to a rally in my life. The April rally in D.C. was great but August 28 will be an awesome display of unity. Check out the TEA arty webpage and you might just find out that you are one , too. If not now, then maybe you will in January when your taxes go up.
I could go point by point and debate your insinuations, however, you are just as closed minded as the people you criticize.
Your talking points are identical to the ones posted last week by the democrat party and I'll be looking for links to show others your allegiance to these "freedom destroyers" you have elected to office.
Good luck in your quest to demean the TEA party movement. You are fighting an uphill battle to dicredit those who want a deficit free, respectable, honest and accountable goverment.
If you pay capital gains tax, payroll tax, are expected to receive an inheritance, energy tax (at the pumps), then you should love this current bunch as of January 1, 2011. Also, the new healthcare taxes will be kicking in soon which will add another $trillion to the deficit in unfunded liabilities. I also expect the Pelosi promoted Value Added Taxes (which are now approaching 20% in England-this is for everyone to pay)to be slammed through before November just to help justify their quadrupleing of our national debt tin the past year.
I know, you feel-gooders say we need more taxes to even out the income for all people. I have news for you, those of us that pay taxes quarterly and never receive a tax check are tired of supporting the sluggards (we don't mind helping the elderly and handicapped)and demand personal accountability. I bet most people on here who love this current government actually received a refund this year.
It's time for the people (not a select few) to take back America.
By the way ibdagigman and anyone else that agrees with them, to call Tea Partiers racist is ignorant and offensive. It was due to many of our votes and the 91% of blacks in America that Obama got elected. You need to get a clue and stop thumpin the racist bandwagon.
receiving a refund is no indication of how much someone pays in taxes. You can receive a refund if you make $1M/year and have enough taken out.
You can also pay taxes quarterly and not have any money to show for it if you're self employed and make minimum wage.
Too many people think a tax refund is free money from the government and statements like that tend to feed those beliefs.
So to reiterate the point if the article Silence Is Golden!!!
Cow rancher,
If you would stop the name calling, people might actually listen to you.
I am not sure that you get it.....You are you through God's graces.....You could have been a homeless person, etc....but God smiled on you.
And, by the way, that's God's money....not yours...that you claim the government is taking from you. You might remember that when you are calling people sluggards or do-gooders....Your hypocrisy has no bounds.
ibdagigman:
I'm with Palin - I think we should all be praying to stop the oil in the gulf. Why do you consider her asking for heavenly help with this issue improper?
Oh wait a minute, I now note your reference to "a misguided flock".
I prefer my politicians to be God fearing.
Mr. Coleman; sorry to see your blog end but I understand about the "busy" part. Don't we all?
Best wishes in your future endeavors and God bless you in all you do.
EGM and The End,
So , the End, I guess you believe in God now since you are telling everyone who God is smiling on. My God says, "To whom much is given, much is required." Therefore, I work.
EGM,
Don't tell me who you are tired of listening to. I bet we had to hear four or five times how you thought it would be OK for your children to be gay. It's getting old.
It's time for Americans to be strong militarily, financially, and morally. The world sees this president as a joke. Al Gore , the climate god, is now being seen as he is...a liar(with data) and an adulterer. Pelosi, Reid, Frank, Blogo, Raum, Jones....enough said.
So pardon my skepticism whenever you blog, but I know your type.
I also will not stand by and have others say lies and warped opinions at my expense.
Your silence would be golden but for some reason, I bet you will still answer back with your two cents worth. It's not quite as golden as silence but it's two cents.
Since I was "called out" I will respond.
I too am dissappointed that JPC is ending his blog. Although we sometimes (maybe most of the time) disagreed, I respected his opinion. His articles were usually thought-provoking and sometimes inciteful (and, at times, insightful).
What I am not sorry to see go is the name-calling and pure mean spirit of many of the posts and bloggers. I may try to persuade you to see my point of view, but I would never disrespect you for your opinion. My opinions appeared less and less due to this downturn in civility.
I wish you well Mr. Coleman!
Sorry to see you are hanging it up, JPC. I think the GCDW did a pretty cool thing in giving space to a local and frequent commenter on the message boards. It may be an experiment worth doing again; what say you, Nick and Chris? Why not a guest editorialist on a rotating, permanent basis? Stints by each guest can run 4 columns, or 1 month. Of course each column would have to be okayed by you, because no one wants to read 4 straight columns on neoconservatism or ACLU card carrying liberalism. There are lots of regular, hard working Greene County folks out there who, judging from their past posts, are very clever, intelligent, humorous, and/or opinionated. I think the idea is both good marketing and community focused. It can be called Soap Box, Cracker Barrel, or something similar.
John
Thank you I have enjoyed the thought provoking.
It is not any wonder, look at all this bickering under a column about learning to listen better. One would think that they have no shame.
As a great coach once said at his retirement speech " Love me or hate me, you've gotta respect me." Thanks for the entertainment John.
ibd.......
You are taking the liberty to not be honest and are taking comments out of context.
Here is a recent (yesterday) Gallup poll (scientifically accurate) of America:
42% of America claims to be conservative or very conservative.
20% OF America claims to be liberal or very liberal.
That means that people who agree with about 1/5 of America are running this country. This is the statistic that 80% of America is having trouble with.
It also means that 38% of America falls into the independent catagory. This is the origin of many of the TEA party.
To lie about me being racist, wanting not to support the handicapped or disabled, to assume that I have recently begun involvement in politics, to say that I haven't been against big government until now, is ashamed and wrong on all accounts.
The problem with the Republicans is that they are also guilty at wasting our money and future money. I just don't think the government is the best vehicle to take care of the truly needy. The government can't even balance their own checkbook. Why would we want them to balance ours?
Cowrancher just keeps proving my point and in a blog about listening, you just can't make this up,
Eastern Greene Mom,
I do apologize if I have offended you. I do not recall saying "mean" things to you. Do you care to refresh my memory so that I can understand your feelings?
Gee John...I wonder if we are going to make it to 100 posts on this one. Seems a lot of people like silver! lol
masonjim49,
It seems you are doing the same thing but without adding any new information.
Here is the definition of blog from Webster's on-line dictionary:
Pronunciation: \ˈblȯg, ˈbläg\
Function: noun
Etymology: short for Weblog
Date: 1999
: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also : the contents of such a site
jim, when we stop commenting then there is no blog. Keep thinking hard, not hardly thinking. :-)
Are you actually being serious cowrancher? You cannot surely be that obtuse to not see what the topic of this blog is. Then to act like the point is to comment or i was saying not to comment. You cannot be that blind. I will spell it out to you as if you are a child. The blog topic is how to become a better listener. It is not what you are talking about. I have been making fun of you because you obviously did not get the point of the blog. not that you shouldn't comment. Is it really that hard to read something and "listen". I really am amazed this kind of stuff cannot be made up, especially under a blog about listening.
The amazing thing is cowrancher made 3 sentences about the topic and 59 sentences about nothing to do with this topic. It just amazes me that someone can read this blog and talk about anything other than you retiring, or being a good listener. Thank you for your time John, I know you have not given this as a reason, however it would make a good one. But there are some that just refuse to listen and only want to push their agenda. Thank you for having an open mind like many do not.
The amazing thing are the people who continue to talk about other people talking.
Are you so bored that you actually counted up sentences?
Do you need some work? I have some chores for you. Still hardly thinkin'?
Cow Rancher
I would ask you to read the blog and see if you can find something that may apply to your life
Let me see if I have this right I cuff em:
Someone writes a blog on lets say how to repair a car. Then someone else starts posting about the best movie they have ever seen. So your suggestion would be to debate the person about the movie?
Some folks just don't get the point of this blog: LEARN TO BE A BETTER LISTENER
masonjim49,
Does the blog topic apply to you as well?
What I get out of the article is two things:
1. When you mentioned Niemoller, my ears perked up due to his questionable history of side-picking. First in WWI, he sunk more allied (us) ships for the Nazi's than any other U boat crew. Then he changed his position to question his support of Hitler (while still being anti-semite).
The best thing I like about him was his quote,
" I hated the growing atheistic movement, which was fostered and promoted by the Social Democrats and the Communists."
History does repeat itself.
2. The other thing I get from this is, while I tried to pay you respect during your swan song, you still chum up with the crowd.
Again, I enjoyed your blogs, I wish others would practice what they preach and ask themselves the same question before they throw it at me. If a question is reasonable, I will research it. If it is not, I will either ignore it or fire it back at them. While I disagree with his anti-semite history, I suppose this is what Niemoller would have done.
So I guess what. You are saying cow rancher is nothing in this blog applies to you?
Definition from above:
"Blog: a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often hyperlinks provided by the writer; also : the contents of such a site"
What cow rancher misses in this definition is that this is JOHN PAUL COLEMAN's Blog, not his. The people who comment on this blog (including me) are not "bloggers" - they are simply people who comment.
Cow Rancher, or any of us who feel the desire, needs to start his own blog which he can then fill with his reflections and comments instead of insisting on hi-jacking other people's blogs.
If you are commenting, then keep it on-topic.
I see (read) cow rancher as a better listener (reader) than many other folks active on this blog do. Yes, while responding to what others write he does often speak to the foundations of why he believes what he believes, but I don't see the issue with that that I guess a lot of you do. Since he usually does seem to genuinely respond to the points made by others, I think he's a pretty good listener.
I think some equate good listening with less typing, which can be the case, but I don't think it is in his case.
question,
Please explain your post to me. Please read the cow ranchers above posts and explain to me how he has "listened" to the topic/blog.
I guess the point i made was right:
Let me see if I have this right I cuff em:
Someone writes a blog on lets say how to repair a car. Then someone else starts posting about the best movie they have ever seen. So your suggestion would be to debate the person about the movie?
Some folks just don't get the point of this blog: LEARN TO BE A BETTER LISTENER
Didn't take long for that to happen.....the Democrats have now invaded the "blogosphere" and want to legislate what you write. Next, there will be a bill introduced with language that states you MUST stay on topic in a blog. The Blog Czar will levy taxes against those who violate. If I wanted to write a story about a snowman who wears underwear in Arizona, you can't stop me. All you have to do is ignore my post. Get on with it, folks!
No kidding, what kinda idiot would want to stay on topic.
John
You have opened a lot of our eyes to all the diversity that lives among us!
oh an attaboy is appropriate! I've enjoyed your thought provoking subjects. I love a good debate...
thank you for the time that you have consumed in this. I realize you must have had hours of research on the topics you chose, then all of the response's, I don't believe were responded to without research. So I imagine it did consume a big part of your day... thank you doesn't seem like enough for the entertainment that you have provided for free!
Maybe you can make a guest appearance in the winter when there is a little more free time.
I know I'd enjoy reading more of your thoughts.
Thanks for the ones that you were able to share with us!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYfGCMORV...
Cowrancher,
Please try to be a better listener, this blog is about being a better listener. By posting stuff about the topic you care about and not listening, you make yourself look foolish.
chevygleen (dude, why did you pick a name that means ejaculate?)(Urban Dictionary: gleen
gleen - 3 definitions - To skeet, or nut. Basically, just ejaculate.
www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=... )
Also, stop being an internet nazi. You are just not as profound as you think you are. Just because you and John have fond comments to each other doesn't mean you need to echo him...perhaps it is masonjim49 that you are emmulating.
A blog, despite what the suspected content says, is still a blog, not an editorial. If someone writes an editorial, then the reader can't respond. Blog means you can try to have a conversation with the writer and other readers, not be a "better listener". Get a clue.
Since you didn't understand the last video link I posted, check out this one. It is fitting for Independence Day. Happy Birthday America!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0LmYEjXN...
Despite your grunts for silence, I prefer to exercise my First Ammendment right of Free Speech while I still can.
Time for a nice, fat cheeseburger!!! Go MEAT!!
I couldn't love it anymore, you just keep proving me right. Maybe someday you will learn to be more than one dementional. Someday I hope you learn to interact with people, not just talk at them. This article seems to be written for you.
I have never asked him to be silent, only learn to listen, which means stay on topic and not just do what the article is about, just wait for your turn to speak. I will pray for him, it does his cause or Christianity no good to have someone post such vulgar things as he did about the name my mother gave me. He is in my prayers.
A personal post about someone's name. A vulgar post. Cuff em and cow rancher need to read this article and learn something.
I hardly think your mother named you gleen. There are no names listed in this five county area named Gleen, either. Either you are not in the public records for birth or you are lying. It may have been defined vulgarly by the urban dictionary, but my point was for people to think about the name you advertise before you use it. This is not near as vulgar as some posts on the "gay marriage" blog. I guess some just choose to be offended when it helps their own cause. I didn't hear you complaining when thedescription of the act of gay marriage was consumated. Be consistent when you throw out the word "vulgar".
Chevy has been repeating for others to think but doesn't show the same trait.
I would appreciate his prayers as well.
Thank you. Also, chevy, don't go getting "holier than thou" on us now. I have a lot of material to fall back on if you are going to be a lukewarm Christian. If you prayer is sincere, thank you. If not, and you don't, then God knows.
It is hot out and I may be a little grouchy, especially when someone pretends to be a school marm and doesn't practice what they preach. I apologize if I offended anyone when I quoted a dictionary or if your mom really named you that.
Wotownboy now enters the category of "internet nazi".
It's a great day to be a free American! Happy 234th!!
"I hardly think your mother named you gleen" You are 100% wrong.
I will continue to pray for you.
Please accept my apologies. Will you forgive me?
I know you and just don't remember hearing the name at all.
John, perhaps you didn't think you would write a blog asking people to not respond (or to just be listeners) when you entitled your blog "GARRULOUSNESS".
garrulously - definition of garrulously by the Free Online ...
gar·ru·lous (g r -l s, g r y -). adj. 1. Given to excessive and often trivial or rambling talk; tiresomely talkative. 2. Wordy and rambling: a garrulous ...
www.thefreedictionary.com/garrulously
absolutely, thank you. FYI why is wotown boy an internet natzi? Wasn't he just voicing his opinion? You know calling it as he sees then as you have put it before.
I have a few questions for you.
1. Lets assume you are a teacher and you teach english. Is every student allowed to ask any question during class? because we have free speech.
2. Are you saying that anyone should post any topic, or talk about whatever they want on a blog no matter what the blog topic is?
3. Do you agree with the concept of keeping on the topic?
Please seriously address my point of: do you really believe that anyone should post about anything they want under any blog. Please keep it reasonable and do not use the extremes. Like no you should not post about sodomy under a such and such blog. I mean do you really think that all blogs are just open forums? Of should we try to maintain some form of topic? Isn't that what open forums are for?
I prefer to stay on topic until I get the opportunity to be cynical with a purpose. It is fun. After all, all cows say is "mooooo". I also will not stand back and allow liberals room to take over the remaining free media in this country. It is time for common sense to replace the ridiculus "hope and change" that we were promised with realism and responsibility.
Ultimately, you will notice, that I try to tie back to the subject matter no matter how many indians have circled the stagecoach.
As far as classrooms go, the teacher must keep the subject on track in order to teach the masses. Mostly, this is so they can pass some standardized test(ISTEP, etc.). However, in good teachers' classes, the subject matter gets taught while allowing time for some free expresion as well. Of course, the school may be the only place that some children get any discipline, structure and even food. Comparing a classroom with a fixed curriculum to an open blog is like apples and oranges.
Isn't the purpose of your column ultimately to be garrulous?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rYfGCMORV...
Much like you have experience and interest in the Goosepond, I have an interest in the TEA Party and exposing who is leading our children and granchildren to doom.
Have a great fireworks wherever you are!
PS chevygleen, I appreciate it.
"I prefer to stay on topic"
I think that's all that many have asked you to do in this blog.
"Isn't the purpose of your column ultimately to be garrulous?" In case you didn't get it the topic was stated with sarcasm. So to answer your question, NO.
Maybe you shouldn't have named your column garrulous. Maybe a good title would have been, "Write what I want to hear."
actually you have it wrong again, It is not what I want to hear. I bring up a topic and then anyone can discuss the topic. Is it really that hard to understand how conversations work?
I am just following your statement:
"I prefer to stay on topic"
"I bring up a topic and then anyone can discuss the topic."
wrong
You chastise and tell people to stay on topic when you want them to but go ahead and ramble when you want to. So forgive this stupid farmer for being confused at your concise and crystal clear instructions.
Just so you can understand, again...garrulous means to ramble and tiresomely talkative.
Next time you try and become a columnist, please refrain from misguided attempts to stay on topic yourself.
I am just following your statement:
"While I do feel that I need to practice this rule, I do not feel it is a universal maxim."
Do you really not see how your posts about politics are completely off topic here?
"While I do feel that I need to practice this rule, I do not feel it is a universal maxim."
That was in reference to speaking up. Not about speaking off topic, do you really not see the difference?
No, my point is that we all have freedom of speech. I wish you could understand that some should be silent (and listen) while others MUST speak up before we can no longer do so.
Again, how could one understand what is in your mind without your further explanation? If you were clear to begin with, then everyone could see the difference.
Here is a video that everyone should see:
Warning!!! It's off topic and may cause you to feel good about our country on this Independence Day:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBTyTWOZ...
I said this:
A personal post about someone's name. A vulgar post. Cuff em and cow rancher need to read this article and learn something.
Cow rancher then said this:
Wotownboy now enters the category of "internet nazi".
Please tell me why when I express my opinion it is labeled as internet nazi and when you do you call it: calling it as you see them.
In the context of someone who drones on and on for a blogger to stay on topic (especially when they have no real thoughts of their own). The definition of an internet nazi is someone who witholds the internet from someone (like Joe Lieberman wants). In that regard, my use of the term is wrong. What would be more correct would be for me to say, "could you add an opinion or fact of your own instead of joining the drones who just scream "stay on topic"."
I, and other readers, appreciate responses that add to the conversation and not just responses which agree with others. If we were taking a poll, then it would be obvious.
As I have stated, numerously, my responses may or may not be on topic. I am being garrulous.
I do hope everyone has watched the video of Red Skelton that I posted. I had seen this years ago and forgot it existed until I recently saw it on the internet.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZBTyTWOZ...
"I and other readers, appreciate responses that add to the conversation"
I couldn't agree with you more, changing the conversation does not add to it. Posting vulgar material about someone's name does not add to it. Thank you for bringing this to light.
You are welcome....?....
Again, you added nothing to the converstaion...just more whining.
Did you learn anything from this blog written by John?
I added nothing, I also subtracted nothing by posting an unrelated item. That is my point by posting unrelated stuff you take away from the conversation. Can you imagine a student every time in English class standing up and talking about the democrats.
Silver Speech? I read this paper every day on line. I read the blogs and articles.
I rarely comment. I learn through listening.
Thank you John for another interesting lesson.
Does anyone else find it ironic that a blog named "Silence is Golden" has devolved into a sparring match about what to post?
Amazing that even the simplest of concepts like try to stay on topic get debated as if they are hard to understand. I can only imagine what people would think of a person that a majority of the time when a subject is brought up, just talked about whatever was on their mind instead.
Have any of you ever been polled by gallup? Sorry off the topic, but I was just wondering? I have not and was just wondering where I sign up.
John, you have made dozens of comments in your blogs that are off topic and were off subject. Below are only a few of them.
If you read the comments that you have made, then read the comments that you have made, one would conclude that you were just saying whatever popped into your head. Does this mean you are human? Yep. Does this mean that you should not throw stones when you live in a glass house? Yep. Have you or have you not made comments that were unrelated to an article that you yourself have written? Yep.
The whole article about "the story" was disjointed and made no sense to print, yet you wrote it. Maybe it was an attempt at humor. I laughed when I read it but not at most of the comments.
If this subject matter of "staying on topic" is so hard for you to understand, then why do you chastise those who also speak their mind?
On gay marriage:
I agree lakermom, also women should not have been given the right to vote, what's next can my dog vote? Also slaves should not have been set free, what's next my dog has rights.

I will have to admit that writing this Blog has been interesting. I assume things and it has taught me not to. For instance, I wrongfully assumed someone with the name On the Blood Trail would be a hunter and would want the Goosepond to do well. I assumed they would want to look to the future and work together for the good of the Goosepond. Brad Feaster helped me write the article and there is no greater force on the side of the Goosepond. He and I both want It to prosper. It just goes to show you, assumptions are almost always wrong.

On civic responsibility:
Now I am a "sarcastic liar" according to the powers that be on this blog. All that for simply asking a question that has yet to be answered amid all of the accusations. Watch out folks. If you ask a question here you will be bludgeoned with accusations and namecalling!

The fact that you did more than ask a question has been pointed out.

Technically you would be cutting line and everyone knows there are no cutsies.

The difference between ignorance and apathy? I don't know, and I couldn't care less.

Now, again, I enjoyed your blogs and wish you weren't quitting. However, this may be a chance to reflect that some people (like me and others) do have an opinion. It does not mean that your opinion is any more valid than ours. To the contrary, our opinion is what keeps the blog going and many, non-voluntary, writers depend on us for their jobs. I would think that our America is still a melting pot of people and ideas. Try to put off your pride and "just get it" that when some hear potatoes they hear "potaaatoes".
In the interim, between this moment and eternity, our country is quickly going to hell in a handbasket. If I get a chance to share a way to improve it, in my opinion, then I will do so. If I see an obstacle to keeping America great, then I will fight it and defeat it.
How can you or your puppets tell someone to stay on topic when they have equal amounts of blog entries that skew from the main point. The bottom line is, this last blog of yours was drudgery so I took the opportunity to inject some life. While some of my comments , at a glance, may seem off topic, I contend that in the big picture of life and while considering metacognition, I know they were relavent.
Good luck. It's time to run the bush hog.
PS I've never been contacted by Gallup either, but I did get a call from Kirby vaccuums.
It was wrong every time I did it. I am sorry, I will try very hard not to do it again. Will you take the same pledge?
I forgive you.
I will not take the same pledge unless I write the blog for the paper. I doubt if that could ever happen. :-)
The cool things that seperates us from the rest of God's living creatures are our souls and our communication. In the case of being told to be silent or not express an opinion...well let's just say, my cows have heard an ear full.
It's steak, potatoes, canteloupe, tomatoes and then Dairy Queen for dessert tonight.
Thank you for provoking thought and sincerity.
I will wager 500$ to be donated to the tea party that he will not do it. No chance he will go 6 months without highjacking a column by rambling about what he wants to talk about. His hypocrisy nows no bounds. He made fun of someone for counting how many times he was off topic and then does the exact same thing. Now watch him weasel on this one. On your mark get set go, start saying anything other than thank you John for agreeing with me, yes I will join you in staying on topic.
Would you like to write a blog for this paper?
who's to say he isn't already writing for this paper? Hold on, my phones ringing. It might be one of those scientific polls.
masonjim49:
I apologize for not responding to your request sooner:
"question,
Please explain your post to me. Please read the cow ranchers above posts and explain to me how he has "listened" to the topic/blog.
-- Posted by masonjim49 on Tue, Jun 29, 2010, at 10:51 AM "
I count 9 posts by cow rancher in this blog prior to your quoted request above. Of those 9, I would characterize the first as addressing John's "retirement" from writing blog articles, along with an invitation to join him and others at a political event. In expressing the invitation, cow rancher expresses his belief that John has an open mind similar to many attending similar events. The 9th post I would characterize as his addressing some of the meat of John's blog article beyond John's "retiring". I do not see a lack of listening demonstrated in these 2 posts.
In the 7 intervening posts, cow rancher responds to posts of others that are directed at him. His responses, while certainly not of like mind of those he is responding to, do show by directly addressing the points made by others, that he is indeed listening to them. Listening does not equal agreeing. In contrast, many of the posts made regarding his posts are nothing more than objections that he is not listening and do not show as much evidence regarding responding to the points he is making.
My bottom line assessment is this. Cow rancher does show that he listens to the points made by others by his intelligent, although often disagreeing responses to the points being made. In contrast, many others in response to the invitation he made to John to attend a tea party rally, instead of just listening themselves, were quick to throw stones over an innocent invitation to a public event.
Everything is relative. A simple invitation was challenged, and when cow rancher defended his actions, the piling on of not respecting the spirit of the topic of the post itself became prime example of how poor listeners we are.
I apologize for being unclear in my question. My question is how is cow rancher listening to this article? My question was not how was cow rancher listening to every other person that mentioned something.
That's the most ridiculous explanation I have ever heard. Lets assume john is a speaker/blog writer. He gives a talk/blog about changing a tire. Cow rancher gets up and says why would you change a tire with the democrats in charge? He then proceeds to respond to every yahoo that responds to his statement about the democrats. The you come along and compliment him for being a good listener. That is exactly what you have just done. He has ignored the topic and "listened" to stuff about unrelated things to the topic and you call him a good listener. You may want to check your logic.
Rather than be sucked into the same trap you used with cow rancher, I'm just going to agree to disagree. If I were to respond directly (showing I was paying attention (listening)) to these posts, I'm sure I would be accused of not listening. How ironic.
By the way, my logic is fine, as applied to what was posted, vice giving an example and then saying my logic doesn't fit the example dreamed up.
You actually made the point for me. 7 out of 9 posts about something other than the topic.
wontonboy,
You have wasted 9 posts just complaining about me and others. Not only do you also go off topic but you live up to all of our expectations by contributing nothing to the conversation.
It is obvious that you not only can not think on your own but you also have a glass that is half full. Why spend life being so negative and contemptuous? You represent your kind very well and consistenly. At least when I am contentious, I am positive that America is the best country on earth and still has a chance of recovering her greatness. I think you have given up on the America that you desire as you see the end is near. Perhaps now is the time for you to listen to those posters on here who are trying to explain to you how logic will help your arguments. They seem reasonable to me.
Is your purpose on this earth to go after me? How flattering!! Thank you for giving me the attention that I obviously deserve.
I bet you are fun to be around at Christmas. Loosen up and hug a child> It will make you smile!
Good luck to you!
And yet again you miss the point you have wasted 13 posts and yet make fun of me for 9.
Sorry to see you fade away John, I am breaking my "Double Eagle" for a little silver, many of the posters here would argue with a fence post.
As far as staying "on topic" that is in the eye of the beholder, some what like trying to drive twenty hogs down the median of an interstate highway, all the distraction and you have hogs all over the place...
Thanks for the entertainment John.
Wow!!!
Have any of you ever written an email and had someone take it the wrong way because they were unable to see the grin on your face when you said it?
Have you ever received an email, or any written correspondence, that you had to stop and ask yourself,"what are they really trying to say here"?
Paranoia then sets in, you worry about it... and then before you know it you have a prescription for some stress relief or ulcer medication, simply because you could not get the true meaning of the message.
Can you truly "listen" to someone on a blog comment?
Since emotion is such an important part of human behavior, wouldn't listening actually involve some face to face interaction, or even a phone conversation?
To that question...If you were having a face to face conversation with the people who commented on the "multiple" topics that have resulted from the single topic that started them, would you still be this rude, simply for the sake of your freedom to say whatever you want?
If I never listened, would I ever hear? Would I hear if nobody said anything? Would you say anything and never say nothing? Would I stay on topic if there really wasn't a topic, but a title?
Would Rick Hudson still be athletic director at Bloomfield if someone had listened? Would Johnpaulcoleman still be a blogger if he quit? Would the 4th of July parade be a 5th of July parade if it's held the day after the 4th? Would Tom Jones run for Mayor if golf were illegal?
My point is this...I have no point. It's the stinking internet and I am free to say whatever I want, whenever I want and you can choose to read or ignore. I bet all you folks that are saying "...stay on topic..." were tattletales in school!!!!!!!!
Go fish!
Funny, yet true...then funny again!!!
Fish is pretty good, too. Except for steak, there is nothing better than a fresh caught blue gill, fresh morels, asparagus, Indiana tomatoes and cantaloupe!
It reminds me of a bumper sticker I read:
"I love all of God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes!"
Go meat!
I think abortion should be paid for by medicaid. It is crazy for this country to pay for other medical procedures and not this one.
This newspaper believes in the open expression of freedom of speech that is provided for in the Bill of Rights. That's the reason that community bloggers are welcome on our website.
This isn't true because as a test, I've had several acquaintances/friends write comments that aren't always in agreeance with the editor or school board or town council and they are removed even with no profanity or people slamming involved. Just had a different opinion. Especially concerning Linton basketball! Bet this becomes one that is removed!
---But my eyes still see---
I have decided cow rancher was correct. You should be able to talk about anything you desire. So cow rancher, IF you were a teacher would you be in the union?
-- Posted by johnpaulcoleman on Mon, Jul 12, 2010, at 12:20 PM
Once again cow rancher proves he does not get sarcasm. How many time can he make a fool of himself?
I gotta admit I keep thinking he won't fall for another one. But he just can't avoid the bait.
Apparently cuff'em is now in charge. Do you have any more orders? Isn't that just like the typical Cop. Maybe cuff'em should learn how to deal with others before he starts barking out orders.
Hmmmmm.
I thought I cuff 'em was spot on.
This is getting richer by the minute, I can't believe it! John being told what he can and cannot post on his own friggin' blog, fercryin' out loud.
Hey cuff em first you post off topic in spanish, now you want the person in charge of the blog to not post. Who died and put you in charge?
Once again cuff em has proven he is no good at his job. You are a police officer and I would suggest you get some more training. I do not work for the paper, never have never will. I have no access to any files that you do not have access to. You stated one time:
"Well it's time to go to work and make sure this is a safe day and night."
With some social skills and a few phone calls one can easily find out who you are. I would suggest you get some more training, I would think a police officer would have better skills. Also I would think that a police officer would not accuse before having evidence. I have many friends that are police officers and it was easily figured out. FYI I accept your apology.
Wow is that some kinda joke does cuff em not get TV where he lives? Emails, IP addresses, and everything you do on a computer is EASILY found out by anyone with an above average IQ. You can download lots of free software and figure out where anyone that posts on a forum is located. You may want to do a little reading, start here:
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,163...
Have you not watched Dateline NBC? Many a murderer has hung himself by thinking by deleting something it is gone. I am amazed that a Police officer is not more aware of how to gather evidence. I hope you do not work for me.
http://www.aquick.org/blog/2006/01/29/wh...
With a little computer savy any IP address can be had.
Cuff em said:
"I put myself in charge"
I am speechless, after all of the arguments he made not wanting anyone to tell him what to say or not to say and refusing to recognize anyone else, he now has put himself in charge. WOW
johnpaulcoleman,
Your quote..."While I feel being silent is not always the best case, many including myself would be better off practicing it more."
No better time than the present.
First cuff em tells everyone he is in charge, now on the blood trail thinks he is. How much fuller can one be than to tell the person in charge of a blog not to post on his own blog, priceless. completely amazing that some feel they control what others do in their own column.
On the bloodtrail said this:
"My point is this...I have no point. It's the stinking internet and I am free to say whatever I want, whenever I want and you can choose to read or ignore."
Now he is telling people they should not post. I would think it wasn't true if i hadn't read it myself.
Is JPC really still in control of his own blog since he quit? just..... can't...give....up....that....con-----trol.
To Chevygleen, wotownboy and EGMom...I am so sorry that I have spoken. I now understand that you three are the only ones with anything worthy to say. Anxiously waiting to hear how you three are going to solve the world's problems!? You folks seem to have all the answers........
on the blood trail we have never asked you not to speak, only to stay on topic. It is you that are guilty of what you accuse, you have told others not to speak.
"Is JPC really still in control of his own blog since he quit?"
I guess on the bloodtrail missed the point. As I said in the blog: "this will be my last Blog". That means I will write no more blogs. It means no change to the blogs I previously wrote.
John, I enjoyed your articles. I always wanted to meet you shake your hand and see the Man then takes a stand. I do wonder if I knew you back when we were younger. Was your Dad Gene? If so we know each other - way back then-
I salute you sir, for taking the challenge.
this is why God gave us two ears, and one mouth.
slaw has something familiar about him.
I meant the words he/she wrote sound like the actual blog that this is supposed to be about.
