Somebody loves you

Whitney Houston was a musical icon in her day. She had a powerful voice, and "The Bodyguard" was up for two Grammy's and won several other awards. She passed away last Saturday at the young age of 48. Speculations have been made her untimely death may have been due to a mixture of prescription medications and alcohol...

Vending machine idea is shocking
Posted Wednesday, February 8, at 1:18 PM

I was shocked to read in a recent news story that a university in Pennsylvania is distributing the Plan B One Step emergency contraceptive -- also known as the "morning-after" pill -- in a vending machine, along with condoms, decongestants and pregnancy tests...

Students should be taught values of life
Posted Wednesday, February 1, at 2:51 PM

Every time I leave a school board meeting, I am in shock and disbelief at some of the things I hear. Not because of the school board or administrators, but because of the things they must undergo to keep their schools running at their maximum potential...

Pajama pants in public...why not?
Posted Wednesday, January 18, at 11:03 AM

I recently read an article that stated a parish commissioner in Louisiana wanted to ban wearing pajama pants in public. My first reaction was to laugh at the ridiculous notion as to regulate the clothing we wear when we run our daily errands. He was reported as saying, "Because it's pajama pants today, next it will be underwear tomorrow."...

Please be responsible on Facebook
Posted Wednesday, January 11, at 2:08 PM

Social media dominates so many aspects of our lives, to the point many businesses have a Facebook page to get their name out. I'll admit I spend a lot of time on some social media sites. Many of my friends are scattered throughout the state, and it's a good way to keep in contact with them and watch their children grow...

Jimmy will be missed
Posted Wednesday, January 4, at 2:21 PM

There is an ongoing joke in the office about how young I am, some saying I am just a baby because they have kids my age. Well, if I am so young I should not have to wake up in the morning to see a story in the paper about someone my age dying. I was 5-years-old when I met Jimmy Allen, and from that point we were instant friends. We went to Head Start together in Linton, and I even taught him how to pump his legs on the swing because he just couldn't keep himself going...

Technology has something for everyone
Posted Wednesday, December 28, at 1:26 PM

Technology is no longer directed toward the young, but also the young at heart. The only daunting thing about that is those that are young get stuck teaching the ways of technology to the young at heart. I grew up with computers, using a computer typing program for the first time in early elementary school, soon followed by educational games like the "Oregon Trail."...

This is a great time of the year
Posted Wednesday, December 21, at 12:34 PM

The holiday season is my favorite time of the year because it forces my family to drop everything in our busy lives so we can spend time together. I get to watch smiles spread across the faces of my favorite munchkins as their parents and family spoil them...

Some seem to forget fairy tales aren't real
Posted Wednesday, December 14, at 11:21 AM

I think our society sometimes forgets that fairy tales aren't real. Snow White lived with seven grungy men with a variety of psychological and physical disorders, and she was asleep when she got her prince. Cinderella lived with a hateful family and spent most of her time cleaning and covered in soot, but she got her prince...

Shower bullies with kindness
Posted Wednesday, December 7, at 12:58 PM

I have addressed the issue of bullying before, but recently I watched a video that brought me to tears. An eighth-grade boy expressed his fears -- with tears running down his face -- of returning to school in a month because the way other students treated him due to his sexual orientation...

Family gatherings are always a good time
Posted Wednesday, November 30, at 10:11 AM

My immediate family only gets together for major holidays, which included a Thanksgiving lunch last week. We don't see each other often, but when we do I think my grandma loses a little faith in all of our sanity. My brother, sister, cousin and I tell on each other, even though our ages range from 20 to 28...

Teachers are people, too
Posted Friday, November 25, at 12:27 PM

I went to a Linton-Stockton School Board meeting this week, and the room was full of teachers from almost every stage of my life, including my kindergarten teacher, fifth grade history teacher, eighth grade math teacher, eighth grade social studies teacher and a few more...

Who really cares about Lohan, Beiber?
Posted Wednesday, November 9, at 2:14 PM

I was scanning through The Associated Press' top news, and read through stories about the attacks in Homs in Syria, 9/11 families suing New York City and Pakistan boosting trades with India. The headlines that struck me as out of place were "Lindsay Lohan returns to court, may return to jail" and later that day a story about Justin Beiber's alleged "baby mama drama."...

Streets have a way of changing
Posted Wednesday, November 2, at 2:14 PM

I was sitting on my parent's front porch after work on Halloween, waiting to see if my dinosaur nephew had acquired any good candy on his first crack at trick or treating. I could hear the little kids across the street screaming, laughing and having a good time. It made me smile because I remembered all the good times we had as kids living on that street...

Television can be used as a learning tool
Posted Wednesday, October 26, at 2:12 PM

A popular young adult novelist was the target of hateful emails in June -- simply because her publisher purchased ad time that aired during a popular teen television show, according to the writer's blog. Sarah Dessen's new book, "Whatever Happened to Goodbye" hit stores recently, and a conservative Florida-based group is asking advertisers to ban Teen Nick and MTV because they air the television show Degrassi...

Are you true to who you are?
Posted Wednesday, October 19, at 1:59 PM

Tattoos are a form of art on the skin, using the body as a canvas to express yourself. Even Mattel has realized the body creations are catching on, with their creation of a collector's tokidoki Barbie doll with tattoos. I was reading through some comments on a blog about the new doll, and I was absolutely shocked at some of the things people were saying...

We think about you every day Hanna
Posted Wednesday, October 12, at 3:39 PM

Happy Birthday, Hanna. It's hard to believe she would be 3-years-old, brought into this world and taken away in less than an hour's time. I sometimes falter in my faith, but I have never doubted the little angel I called my niece is watching over us every day...

'Back door visitor' needs a real job
Posted Wednesday, October 5, at 1:23 PM

A few weeks ago, my sister heard someone trying to turn the knob on our back door. She stood in the kitchen, afraid. The person walked away, and she peeked out the back door to see them heading into the shed in our back yard. Upon apparently not finding anything of value, she saw the stranger head back up the walkway. He saw her face in the window and ran away...

Don't forget to look back and smile
Posted Wednesday, September 28, at 12:22 PM

As I got a shove into the real world, utility bills, rent and school loans began piling up. As the amount of money I have dwindles, I have noticed some of my expectations dropped. Some things I had been concerned about when I was a child have become less important...
