New college grad is always there for me
Posted Wednesday, May 8, at 1:43 PM
Today is a huge milestone for my best friend, Samantha. It has been a long, strenuous road, but she will be graduating from college. It's the first step in her journey to the career she wants, but I couldn't be more proud of her. She is a full-time wife, mother, employee and student. I always tell her she is superwoman...

Should I toss fish back in or into frying pan?
Posted Wednesday, May 1, at 1:46 PM

I'm dealing with the repercussions of being stubborn and sketchy Indiana weather this week with a runny nose and scratchy throat. It was warm and nice out the beginning of last week, so on my weekend off we planned to work in some time for fishing. Of course, by the time the weekend rolled around it was rainy and chilly. But, the lovely Indiana weather didn't keep us indoors...

It was a happy ending for little lost pup
Posted Wednesday, April 24, at 2:38 PM

Most of the time I am overwhelmed by the generosity of people, and their willingness to help others. But, sometimes people surprise me with their negativity. My sister is an animal lover. I came home from work Sunday evening to find the most precious little dog running through the kitchen...

There are lots of people willing to help
Posted Wednesday, April 17, at 2:37 PM

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' " -- Fred Rogers I watched the news in horror Monday, as once again the foundation of our country was rocked by senseless actions...

We have many incredible people in our area
Posted Wednesday, April 10, at 1:33 PM

I'm continuously amazed by the incredible people I get the opportunity to meet through my job. Sometimes the events and stories I get to cover make it seem like this isn't even work. Last week, I had the opportunity to hang out with a bunch of 3, 4, and 5-year-olds who were able to see their own pieces of artwork on display for the entire community to see...

Former history teacher leaves impression
Posted Wednesday, April 3, at 3:44 PM

I went to cover the Linton-Stockton School Board special session Tuesday afternoon, and I learned another of my favorite junior high school teachers will be leaving. Gene Hall will be leaving the middle school, his resignation effective next Tuesday. In his letter of resignation he explained he would be taking a position at Farm Bureau Insurance in Linton...

GCDW offers coverage before, during, after game
Posted Wednesday, March 20, at 1:40 PM

I'm sure over half of the county is sick of hearing about Miner City Basketball, but as a Linton-Stockton graduate I'm more excited than ever to watch the school make history. I'll be at the big game Saturday -- sporting my blue, of course -- to cheer on the Miners as they try for the state champion title, as well as work to tell the story of the incredible fans who have driven hundreds of miles in recent weeks to show support of their small-town team...

School spirit alive and well at Linton
Posted Wednesday, March 13, at 1:41 PM

Linton-Stockton School Corporation has a lot going for it, but in my opinion its school spirit shines through. I walked the halls of my old high school last week to talk to students about the new Miner mascot uniform, and the walls were covered in red and blue in preparation for the regional...

It's important to make memories with the ones you love
Posted Wednesday, March 6, at 11:53 AM

I have a random train of thought sometimes, and the other day my wondering mind brought back some good memories. I was talking to a friend about a project she is working on with her son's class. They are building a greenhouse to grow radishes. Just reading the word radish made me think about my great-grandma Taylor, and the greenhouse conversation turned around to sharing memories of my late great-grandparents...

20-somethings need to be patient
Posted Wednesday, February 27, at 1:33 PM

I ran into an old high school acquaintance last week at a local convenience store. He was having an obvious rough day at work, so we talked about what was bothering him. His boss was being unfair, which he admitted is happening entirely too often among all people in the workforce...

Gesture puts troubles in perspective
Posted Wednesday, February 20, at 2:24 PM

It's really funny how life works sometimes. It seems like at the perfect moment when you realize you've helped someone else, they find a way to inadvertently help you in return. Sometimes I will go through these phases where I keep asking myself, "Why am I here?" and "What's the point?"...

Those missing socks will never come back
Posted Wednesday, February 13, at 2:59 PM

Becoming an adult means learning important life lessons, and using those lessons to become a better person. I've learned a lot about myself and life in general since graduating high school almost six years ago. Most recently, I've learned no matter how hard people are on you, it's important not to take the little things to heart...

There's a 'fine line' when dealing with some stories
Posted Wednesday, February 6, at 3:41 PM

In the last few weeks I've had to cover two different stories where two local schools were on lockdown in back-to-back weeks. These stories are important, but in my opinion they rank in the top three most difficult to write. As Linton-Stockton Superintendent Nick Karazsia told me, there is a fine line between adequate information and too much information...

What do you have to smile about today?
Posted Wednesday, January 23, at 1:26 PM

This life we live is crazy, and I'm slowly learning it just isn't going to slow down. Lately, I've learned I'm OK with that. When I was growing up, I remember being so excited to grow up and get out on my own. I was ready to make my own rules, go to bed whenever I felt like it and find a career I loved...

Flu bug, flip-flopping weather strickens the area
Posted Wednesday, January 16, at 3:12 PM

Flu season, flip-flopping weather and wintery illnesses have stricken the area fiercely in the last few weeks. The mix of cold to warm and wet to dry weather often wreaks havoc on our lungs and can lead to contagious illnesses if we are not careful...

You don't have to fight alone
Posted Wednesday, January 9, at 3:11 PM

I had a sudden realization this weekend -- that I don't always have to be the strong person. It's OK to tell someone if you are struggling. Especially those who care about you. Just because society places a stigma on an issue or you hear too many people over dramatizing a problem that is totally real, doesn't mean you have to pretend the issue isn't there...

Glad I survived the mini-blizzard of 2012
Posted Wednesday, January 2, at 3:21 PM

I am frequently reminded why I love this little county so much, and this winter weather reinforced my love for Greene County. Four-wheel drive trucks are never scarce here in good ol' Redneck, USA, and thankfully neither is a friendly neighbor -- or even stranger...

And I feel fine
Posted Wednesday, December 19, at 3:58 PM

I'm glad it was decided we have our office holiday party Thursday, considering the world is supposed to end on Friday. I mean, seriously, I deserve at least one more home cooked meal before the world ends, right? The Internet continues to amuse me as we near what the Mayans allegedly predicted as the end of the world...

Why does it cost so much to eat healthy?
Posted Wednesday, December 12, at 1:53 PM

The American Psychological Association has recently suggested having a television in a child's bedroom can lead to childhood obesity. They have even gone so far as to suggest banning the allowance of having televisions in their rooms. First of all, it's obvious they would never be able to actually ban having a television in a child's room. Are they going to do monthly raids on households to see if there is a television set in a bedroom? I highly doubt it...

Jesus is the reason for the season
Posted Thursday, December 6, at 6:55 AM

There are two times of year that I just cannot get enough of -- Fourth of July and the Christmas season. Fourth of July is a fun time of year which reminds me why it is so great to live in this country. Also, a little selfishly, my birthday is July 6...
