Don't be hurt by the ugly P word ... PridePosted Friday, August 12, 2011, at 11:17 AM
"Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
If you are about to by-pass this article because you do not think you struggle with pride, then you probably do. Pride is too prideful to say, "I struggle with pride."
Pride creeps into someone's life when that person is "puffed-up" or thinks of themselves more highly than they ought. It is an ugly characteristic to have. In fact, it is the very obsession that casted Satan (who was once the most beautiful of angels) into the fiery furnace.
Pride lifts itself up above God because "pride" believes it can accomplish all things and be all things on its own and without the help of the Almighty. Furthermore, the prideful person cannot accept another person becoming more prosperous then they are. Most people who struggle with pride fail to recognize and appreciate others. They contribute their achievements to their own intellect or strength. There is no room to show gratitude towards God or others and their head is "in the clouds" so-to-speak.
Other evidence of pride is one who is too haughty to do the most minuscule of tasks. They boast and speak arrogantly of what their hands have accomplished. Moreover, it is the root of strife. Without pride, there would be no need to defend one self. Pride says,
I need ...
I deserve ...
I want ...
However, one must be forewarned that when pride is not instantly dealt with, it can lead to the prideful person's destruction.
But a humble man trusts in God to vindicate him. Paul challenges all believers to live a life that is worthy of their calling by lowliness, gentleness, long-suffering, mutual forbearance, and peace (Ephesians 4:1-3). "Gentleness" and "meekness" refers to a humble, submissive attitude that is the opposite of pride. Not to be confused with weakness; gentleness is strength that is submitted to God and delights in serving others.
