The idea of worship is to humble ourselvesPosted Friday, February 3, 2012, at 12:10 PM
Acts of Worship
"It's who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That's the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship. God is sheer being itself -- Spirit. Those who worship him must do it out of their very being, their spirits, their true selves, in adoration." (John 4:23-24, MSG)
Worship expresses our feelings of awe and adoration towards the Lord. It is a simply a way to demonstrate that He is worthy of our love and devotion. There are many ways to worship God while giving Him the praise and homage He deserves. Here are a few expressions of worship:
* Playing Instruments and Dancing -- David danced before the Lord in adoration. He led the whole country to worship God with shouts and trumpet blasts (2 Samuel 6:12-16). Scripture tells us that David was a man after God's own heart. May we be a people that seek and desire the heart of God through various displays of worship.
* Bowing at the Alter -- Bowing before the Lord illustrates that we recognize Him as the Ruler of our lives and that we submit ourselves before Him. David "bowed" before Saul while paying him homage (1 Sam 24:8). Ruth "bowed" to the ground before Boaz (Ruth 2:10). Joseph saw the sheaves of his brothers "bowing down" before his sheaf (Genesis 37:5). If people bowed down and submit to earthly rulers, how much more then should we bow down before the Almighty God?
* Lifting Your Hands -- Lifting your hands before the Lord is an attitude of praise that blesses God (Psalm 134:1-3). It is difficult to comprehend how we mere humans could bless God but the simple act of lifting our hands is a blessing to Him. Yet still, many still struggle with this simple act of worship.
* Singing -- Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine, and all the women followed her with tambourines, dancing. Miriam led them in singing (Exodus 15:20-21). They sang to God during times of victory. I encourage you, if you are not feeling victorious today, sing to the Lord and you will begin to experience your victory!
Whether we bow down, dance, lift our hands, or sing in admiration to the Lord; the idea of worship is to humble ourselves and reveal a holy reverence to a holy God. It is not for us to display in public how holy we are but to reveal how holy He is. Regardless of how you choose to worship, what matters most to God is that it is out of the sincerity of your heart. This is what it means to worship "in spirit and in truth."
