"More Than a Pretty Face"Posted Friday, May 18, 2012, at 5:05 PM
"Let not yours be the [merely] external adorning with [elaborate] interweaving and knotting of the hair, the wearing of jewelry, or changes of clothes; But let it be the inward adorning and beauty of the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible and unfading charm of a gentle and peaceful spirit, which [is not anxious or wrought up, but] is very precious in the sight of God." (1 Peter 3:3-4, AMP)
Women in America spend over $2 billion a year on beauty products. The Bible has a great deal to say about both inner and outer beauty. As Christian women, we are representatives of Christ and our outward appearance should be a complement to (more importantly), our inner spirit.
There is nothing wrong with a Christian woman having good hygiene, healthy skin care, appropriate attire, and gracious manners. In fact, having a clean appearance attracts others to her life that she may have the opportunity to share Christ. However, if a woman spends more time on her outward appearance than on her inner beauty, she is taking her eyes off of the Lord and idolizing herself.
Unfortunately, today many young women use revealing clothing to attract attention and uphold a worldly self-image. They justify their provocative dress by simply saying, "that's the latest fashion." This is the kind of "beauty" and attention that the Bible warns us about, "Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised." (Proverbs 31:30, NIV). Fashions and trends are fleeting, constantly changing from one season to the next.
Women, how we carry ourselves is magnetic to the kind of people we will attract. If a young unmarried woman dresses scantily, then she will attract a man who will lust after her and disrespect her. However, a young modest woman who carries herself with a gentle and quiet spirit will be treated with the preciousness that the Lord intended.
More appealing than outward appearance is a woman's heart and countenance. When she is abiding in Christ, she carries an unexplainable softness that is attractive. Love, kindness, and peace is reflected upon her face. This is the kind of unfading beauty that no amount of make-up can conjure. After all, make-up and beauty regimens will eventually fade but the HOLY SPIRIT is eternal and will never fade.
