Volunteerism alive and well for annual parade

The 2012 Linton Freedom Festival and the 107th Freedom Festival Parade were celebrated in some of the highest temperatures on record, but that didn't stop our nearly 160 parade participants and their families and friends from celebrating this country's freedom and showing their patriotism.

As this was my first parade as the executive director of the Chamber here in Linton, I was so impressed to see how all of us "Proud Americans" can work together to bring something far greater and bigger to life than we ever could alone. "Thank you" never seems to say enough, but it is with heartfelt thanks that I want to express to all of you who participated in this year's festivities.

It is a privilege to work with the Linton Freedom Festival Taskforce. The following individuals exhibit the highest level of commitment and work ethic that can be found today. These are the men that I want my sons to rub shoulders with in order for them to see the kind of Americans and citizens they can aspire to become:

Bob Bradford -- still working for UDWI at the age of 81, Bob is a kind-hearted man who gives generously of his time, energy and resources to both people and projects. He has been a vital part of the LFF Taskforce for many years and is always willing to go out of his way to make sure the little things get done and get done well. Bob is a true friend.

John Cotter -- quiet and steady, John is a calm voice amongst us who works steadily behind the scenes to get all accomplished. His commitment to this community and country is evident as he serves and works (at URS). John is a dedicated man who leads with grace and kindness.

Jeff Franklin -- boisterous and a true Lintonian, Jeff serves our community by coaching baseball, cross country, and serving other sports organizations. His energy and work ethic are contagious as you work on projects with him ... "let's just get it done." His wife and family support him as he donates his time to the Chamber and other venues.

Curt Hatton -- always humorous, Curt adds a lightheartedness to the hard work as it is being done. One never knows just what Curt's gonna say, but you can always count on him to keep his word.

Rob Kendall -- we missed Rob this year as he was ill, but his truthfulness and leadership are always appreciated as we work together and look for ways to improve what we do. His sacrifice of time and energy are invaluable to the Chamber and the Freedom Festival.

Dale Knotts -- what can I say about Dale? He keeps us laughing and never misses a beat. He always encourages and his actions back up his words. Dale's work on the entertainment lineup for each festival is a huge blessing and we couldn't do it without him.

Ralph Witty -- the Commander. Ralph has been the Director of the Freedom Festival forever and always keeps us moving with lists of things to accomplish. His dedication to this community is seen by his never-ending energy to see tradition upheld and patriotism celebrated through the LFF Parade each year. Ralph's commitment has never wavered and continues to this day.

Crystal Woods -- our only Taskforce female, has put up with all these guys for quite some time. Crystal is a conscientious, dedicated member who keeps food on the table for her family even as she gives of her time for the Chamber and the community. Her husband and children often work alongside her and we thank them too.

These are the kind of individuals that are an example to us all. I hope that you and your family will find a way to use your gifts and talents by giving of yourselves. With all of our idiosyncrasies and differences, together we can make a difference right here in Linton, Greene County and our blessed country.
