Records are made to be broken
Congratulations to Alli Workman of Bloomfield and Clair Byers of Eastern Greene who set new meet records in last week's Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference track and field meet at Linton-Stockton.
Workman set new meet records in the 1,600 meters in a time of five minutes and 21.70 seconds and won the 3,200 in a new record time of 11:44.96. Byers established a new standard in the girls pole vault with a vault of nine feet.
In looking at the SWIAC meet records last week, I couldn't help but notice there have been some pretty impressive track and field records set in our little corner of the world here.
Let's start with White River Valley pole vaulter Matt Campbell, who set the conference meet record with a winning effort of 15 feet and 10 inches in 2001.
That's not all Campbell did though - he would go on to vault nearly a foot higher that season. Campbell set the Indiana High School State Championships meet record when he cleared 16-9 at the state meet in 2001 for his third state championship in the event.
That record has since been broken. Deakin Volz of Bloomington South set the current standard just last spring at 17 feet, 1/2 inch.
Also from White River Valley, Doug Dayhoff is the current record holder in the 200 with a time of 22.05 set in 2004 and in the 400 meters, 48.4 seconds in 2003 and Ron Provo holds the current mark in the discus with a throw of 148-5 in 1999.
Shakamak's Drew Gambill, son of Laker baseball coach Todd Gambill, set the current standard in the 800 meters, running the two laps in 1:55.9. Any time under two minutes in that race is quite good.
Linton-Stockton high jumper Todd Herman set the bar for that event with a record leap of 6-8 in 1990. That record was matched by Kenneth Green of Bloomfield in 1997.
Both would go on to set personal bests of 6-10 in their high school careers.
Four current SWIAC meet records were set just last year.
Shakamak's Aleksey Green set the 800-meter record with a time of 2:24.46. Linton-Stockton hurdler Grant Stamm bettered his previous marks in the 110 meter hurdles (14.59) and 39.79 in the 300 low hurdles.
Stamm's records are all the more remarkable considering he made a complete recovery from a gruesome injury suffered in a 2013 sectional football game against Tecumseh, where Stamm's ankle was basically shattered.
Linton-Stockton thrower Micaela Hazlewood set a new standard in the shot put with last year's effort of 45-2. Her record throw of 153-11 in the discus, set in 2013, still stands.
Both Stamm and Hazlewood are continuing their track and field careers at the collegiate level, Stamm at Indiana State University and Hazlewood at Purdue University.
It may be years before any of these records are eclipsed.
Records are made to be broken, but there are some state meet records that have stood for a very long time.
Jerry Hill of Indianapolis Tech set a state meet record which still stands, winning the 120-yard high hurdles in a metric-equivalent time of 13.64 seconds in 1976 and Jeff Woodard of New Albany set the high jump mark of 7 1 1/4 in 1977. Woodard's record leap was tied by Ron Jones of Mount Vernon and Adam Shumpert of Peru, both in 1980.
I witnessed first-hand how good Woodard and Hill were, having competed against both.
On second thought, it would be more accurate to say I was at the same meets they were. I was hardly competitive against the likes of Jeff Woodard and Jerry Hill.
Rudy Chapa of Hammond set not only a state meet record but a national high school record at the time, becoming the first prepster in the U.S. to break nine minutes in the two mile with a time of 8:58.5 in 1975 (Chapa's record has since been surpassed by Futsum Zienasellassie of Indianapolis North Central's time of 8:51.15 set in 2012.)
Which goes to show you, some of the "old guys" were pretty good too.
There are a couple of state track records that will never be broken, mostly because the races aren't run anymore.
Clyde Peach of Indianapolis Brebeuf set the 100-yard dash record of 9.5 in 1966. That translates to a metric equivalent time in the 100 meters of 10.39 seconds, .008 behind the current record holder in the 100 meters, Jerome Harrison of Jeffersonville, who ran 10.31 in 1981.
Larry Highbaugh of Indianapolis Washington ran the 220-yard dash in 20.5 seconds in 1967, on a straightaway. While 220 yards has an approximate metric equivalent in 200 meters, the sprint is no longer run on a straightaway out of a chute.
So that record stands.
Highbaugh would go on to play football for Indiana University.
Twenty-point-five seconds - now that's fast!
