Looking for a friend named Josh
Posted Friday, March 17, 2017, at 9:10 PM
Joshua: According to some translations the name Joshua means God is generous. In my particular case, God certainly has been generous... with Josh’s.
It all started innocently enough when I was five years old. My sister gave birth to my nephew, Josh Pickett. From the time he was old enough to play in the sand as a child we have been friends. I fondly remember our first hunts together, equipped with Nerf archery equipment, patroling the wild expanses of our childhood backyards in pursuit of whitetail deer. Finding only limited success with foam equipment, we traded foam and elastic for guns and bows as soon as possible.
For many years it was just me and this lone Josh pursuing outdoor activities. Then, one day, we added one more Josh into our group, Josh Buskirk.
Better known as Buzzy, as another Josh would just be confusing. Buzzy brought a fresh burst of enthusiasm to the crew, a zeal to learn all the nuances of waterfowl hunting. Although starting as a waterfowling buddy, Buzzy quickly became a regular for many of our outdoor activities. If it was happening outside, Buzzy could be counted in.
The first year we hunted together we made a trek to Arkansas to hunt snow geese during the spring conservation season. As it so happened, another Josh (Josh Mason) was hunting snow geese not far from us.
Josh Mason messaged us and asked if we were doing any good. Now, Josh Mason (to be known as Mason from this point on for obvious reasons) lived no farther than Dugger from us, and within a year no more than a mile from my house.
The following fall Mason accompanied us on a few hunts. Slotting into the group seamlessly, he made Josh number three. And as if three wasn’t enough, Mason has a friend that occasionally joins us. You guessed it, his name is Josh, Josh Strahle.
Many jokes have been made about all the Joshs. Some going so far as to ask if I put an ad in the paper searching for that name in particular. While it can become confusing at times... especially when all their wives insist on calling each one Josh, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
So this one’s for you Josh, and Josh, and Josh, oh and Josh.
