More Pros and Cons of being a small town reporter from a big city
Last week, as I was describing the people I work with, I decided I would need a Part II, so here it is:
My editor, Sabrina Stockrahm. Works harder than any boss I’ve ever had, and she always, always has faith in me.
She is a great example of what a journalist should be, and I have learned much just by watching her. We also worked together at Arby’s and at Country Porch, and we’ve always done so successfully. With some people, you just click, but with Sabrina it is more like a click.....boom (laugh).
Okay, let’s leave the newsroom now, and head up front. Here we find Becky Thompson, easily one of my favorite people ever. Her sense of humor, her smarts, her wit, all combine to make her, to me, super-easy to work with and impossible not to laugh with. She does her job well, treats customers appropriately and loves her family. Plus, she can be the biggest smarty-pants when the doors lock and its just us. I loves me a big smarty-pants!
Sitting at desk #2 is the lovely Rachael McKee. She is not only lovely, but she seems to have inherited the best parts of her mom, Becky Thompson. Along with those parts, she is an amazing artist, a loyal friend, a great mother and the daughter I never had.
We find the same things funny, and we relate on many levels. She brightens up this already-bright-most-days office, and I’m grateful she is here.
Heading over to the oddly placed office of circulation, there sits Laura Faulk.
This woman always seems to be in a good mood, no matter what’s going on. She has a heart the size of Texas, is efficient at her job, and never fails to give me her pretty smile when I come in. If I were to do one of those trust tests where you fall backwards and trust that someone will catch you, I would want Laura back there for sure. She loves her family, is serious about her job, and makes the office a better place just by showing up.
Walking now........from Laura’s cubbyhole, through the newsroom, turn right and you find yourself in the Advertising Dept. You’re in good company here. Heidi Puckett and Tina Davis, again, very good at what they do. Because of their efforts, the paper gets ads, and those ads are our bread and butter, and allow us to eat better than bread and butter each week.
These two are the creators of the ‘air five,’ a ritual we perform whenever something goes well, someone makes a funny or completes a task.
Every now and then, we hear “AIR FIVE” shouted from advertising, and all of the cool people raise an arm, hand extended, to slap an air five to........the air.
It doesn’t seem as fun on paper as it really is, I swear.
Heidi is just a joy. Always kind, she even invites me over to watch the Walking Dead because I dont have cable. She is always sweet, and has good taste in coffee!
Further back is Tina. I just love Tina. She has a knack for witty sarcasm that I admire and envy. She is always dressed fashionably and has a ready smile for me every day. She also has THE cutest grandson, I just want to pinch his widdle cheeks!
A little further, and we enter the office of Christy Lehman. Her office always smells good. Yeah, I know that’s weird to say, I’m not weird.
Christy is another of my favorite people ever. She’s funny, gives me scarf-tying tips, and she is the first one, whenever something bad happens in an employee’s life, to go get a card to pass around. She takes care of people, and I love that. Along with her hubby Kevin, she is a wonderful human.
Bookmark time, getting too long. Fisticuffs.
Next week: The pressroom and inserters!
