End of the Season Feelings
Posted Friday, September 23, 2016, at 5:02 PMI get the feeling that the last few weeks of our Greene County Farmers’ Markets are like the last few days of Summer Camp. What was once a fury of activities, things-to-do, and planning has suddenly subsided to a shell of what it once was- I’m now left suddenly look around with this semi-shocked look on my face as I try to recalibrate my brain to think like it did before the onset of the market season. ... -
Pumpkin if you do… pumpkant if you don’t
Posted Thursday, September 8, 2016, at 1:46 PMIt doesn’t seem like it, but pumpkins are surprisingly difficult to grow. Our autumnal spice conduit and Jack-O-Lantern canvases require a lot of consideration throughout the growing season. I should know: I tried to plant two in my home garden this year only to harvest a large paper sack full of rotten vines. ... -
Bananas for apples
Posted Thursday, September 1, 2016, at 9:05 AMI've got a serious case of apples on the mind as of late. To be fair, this is the season to be excited about apples, and the place with which to celebrate their significance. I get a sense of giddiness every time I drive under the Bloomfield Apple Festival Banners (which happens at least twice daily) as I count down the days until I can celebrate this iconic fruit with my fellow Hoosiers on Oct. 7 and 8... -
Putting produce seconds first
Posted Thursday, August 25, 2016, at 10:40 AMI have a problem. Every week I go completely overboard at the local Farmers' Market. I don't mean this in the hyperbolic sense, I impulse buy bushels of produce from the market most weeks of the year. It generally takes up the entire back seat of my car. The result of this weekly splurge generally entails that I have to explain to my partner Chris (generally two hours into a six hour canning fiasco) that I "learned my lesson" and will "probably never do this again." Probably... -
It's a cherry important time of year
Posted Thursday, August 18, 2016, at 11:23 AMBeing from Minnesota, there are many times in which I will feel completely out-of-the loop when it comes to seasonal offerings at our Farmers' Markets. This happened quite frequently when I moved to the area, and despite 9 years of dedicated marketgoer-ship and countless hours spent traveling to many of the fantastic markets in our region -- it still happens from time to time... -
Considerations of National Farmers' Market Week
Posted Thursday, August 11, 2016, at 9:46 AMNational Farmers Week is Aug. 7-13, and I'll be honest- it seems a little counterintuitive that the celebratory holiday take place when the 2016 Market Season for many markets is just over two-thirds complete. I don't claim to know the intentions of those responsible for choosing holidays and national celebrations; but it seems excessive to host Farmers' Market Week in the same week as "Sneak Some Zucchini Onto Your Neighbor's Porch Night" (Aug. ... -
Celebrating National Watermelon Day
Posted Thursday, August 4, 2016, at 11:58 AMThis week for the first time ever, my family celebrated National Watermelon Day! Now, I'm not entirely sure if National Watermelon Day is a relatively new thing that people are celebrating; or if it is an older celebration that was just seemingly propelled into the spotlight, but to me it seemed that there was an unusual number of people in my Facebook and Twitter feed were singing praises to these fine fruits... -
Tomato season is at its peak!
Posted Friday, July 29, 2016, at 11:07 AMI'm guessing that few people think about tomatoes as much as I do. It is practically a nine month journey for me. January, I'm flipping through seed catalogues and seeking out seed swaps for uncharted (to me) tomato varieties. March, I am pouring over my spry little seedlings-- adjusting the flow of air, light and temperature to ensure hearty plants ready for the garden after Mother's Day. ... -
It's HOT! Cool off with melon and lemon shake ups
Posted Friday, July 22, 2016, at 10:41 AMThe Muskmelon is a favorite treat in my family this time of year. Often called, "North American Cantaloupe" the slightly sweet, orange fleshed beauty arrives by the truckloads in my neighborhood market. Given that Muskmelon pair well with a wide repertoire of summer flavors (e.g., mint, lime, prosciutto, orange) it could be (and in my case, "has been") incorporated into one's breakfast, lunch, and dinner on a hot summer's Day. ... -
It's the most wonderful time of the Market Season
Posted Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at 3:33 PMWhat is yellow, round, a cousin of the almond, and turning up in our Farmers' Markets this month? Its PEACHES, but you probably already knew that. Yes, Peaches made their first appearance at the Greene County Farmers' Market last week- and the timing couldn't be better to help draw in the busy fairgoers to the Friday and Saturday Markets in between activities. ... -
Local foods in local menus
Posted Thursday, July 7, 2016, at 5:06 PMThus far, July has been a wonderful month for our Greene County Farmers' Markets. Last weeks' cool temperatures and July 4 Festivities brought in a buzzing crowd for both the Bloomfield and Linton Markets. Blueberries, cucumbers, and eggplant were among some of the newer selections that were offered addition to the lettuce, radish, rhubarb, onion selections that you can expect to be in great supply in the early summer. ... -
Local Farmers' Markets work to address rural food insecurity
Posted Thursday, June 30, 2016, at 2:27 PMThis week marks the start of the second month for the Greene County Farmers' Markets. July is a tricky season for our local markets. We know from experience that around this time the dedicated community interest in attending the market begins to ebb as the increasing temperatures/plethora of family activities make a compelling case for scaling back one's market attendance... -
Beet the heat with radishing market vegetables
Posted Thursday, June 16, 2016, at 6:02 PMFarmer's Market season is heating up. This week marks the fourth and third week for the Downtown Bloomfield Market and the Linton Farmers' Markets, respectively. With the sudden transition to warm and humid weather- the produce that is great for summer recipes are beginning to develop in the fields and show their lovely faces on the vendor tables. ... -
Gardener's Paradise at the Farmers' Market this week
Posted Thursday, June 9, 2016, at 1:48 PMOne of the most important things I have learned in my gardening experience is the irrefutable value of an early-season, rain-free Friday night or Saturday morning. It is during these precious 48 hours I am able to do the lion's share of my gardening projects in a given week... -
Seasonal shift boasts the best of both worlds for Farmers' Market shoppers
Posted Friday, June 3, 2016, at 1:05 PMThe sudden shift in atmospheric conditions mean a bountiful and varied selection for Farmers' Market shoppers this week. Cold-loving crops from the cool-rainy weather of weeks past are still represented among the vendor tables, while the sudden burst of warm weather has added an assist to the warmer seasonal crops that customers yearn for in summer recipes... -
Rainy days boast a bountiful supply and varieties of lettuce and radishes
Posted Thursday, May 26, 2016, at 9:02 AMAn unseasonably cool and rainy May has set the stage for the beginning of the 2016 Farmer's Market Season in Greene County. The Market in Downtown Bloomfield opens in its new location on the corner of Franklin and Spring streets this week. As a market, Bloomfield prides itself as a venue to showcase the local attractions and downtown businesses to locals and visitors. ...
