Don’t forget to check your shoe
Posted Thursday, February 23, 2017, at 9:08 AMOpposing opinions. Strong emotions. High stakes. Think back to the last time you had a conversation that contained all three elements. Combing through my own personal annals of history, I recall an incident where these elements collided to craft my own potential recipe for disaster or opportunity... -
A treasure-trove of “-isms”
Posted Tuesday, February 7, 2017, at 3:36 PM1Growing up in a rural setting, I was a sponge for local idioms and colloquialisms. These “folksy” sayings were usually a treasure-trove of wisdom, and I’ve always been pleasantly surprised at how many of them could successfully be applied to the business world... -
Moving greater things
Posted Friday, January 27, 2017, at 5:17 PMLet’s see how well I can do from memory: Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address (no peeking allowed on my part): Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation or any nation, so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure... -
Fail Forward
Posted Monday, January 2, 2017, at 4:56 PM1I’m sitting before a blank white Word document (paper is so passe’ you know), realizing that my blog deadline is forthcoming, and the last thing I want to do is fail to come up with something creative and thought-provoking. Then it hit me, failure is my best option… as a subject. ... -
‘South’s the drop off, moron!’
Posted Thursday, December 15, 2016, at 4:21 PMI don’t remember my mama having much in the way of free time while we were growing up. She worked tirelessly to raise three girls, rarely allowing herself the luxury of pausing to catch her breath for a moment of relaxation or entertainment... -
Staying in control of your finances
Posted Monday, December 5, 2016, at 11:27 AM“You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you.” ― Dave Ramsey Both our personal lives and the businesses at which we labor are constrained by the financial resources at our disposal. These resource constraints vary greatly among people because, let’s face it, some people and businesses are simply better at making money than others. ... -
Beware of the goat
Posted Monday, November 21, 2016, at 4:49 PM“Trump will win the presidency when the Cubs win the World Series.” I had to laugh when I first heard that statement. Without a doubt, we live in an age where the improbable is a daily occurrence. Regardless of our sports affiliation or political stance, we have to step back from time to time, smile, and tip our hats to a world that is never dull. ... -
Honey for the Soul
Posted Friday, November 4, 2016, at 11:25 AMWhy is it that sometimes one has to live a lot of life before you truly understand what your parents were trying to teach you? I was probably in my late-twenties before I took to heart and started practicing something my father had preached to me for years. He used to say, “Sis, you catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar.”... -
Start your engines!
Posted Wednesday, October 26, 2016, at 12:17 PM0400 – Landis Girls Residence No particular weekday Gentlemen, start your engines! (In our case, I guess I should say “ladies.”) These size 10s hit the floor, and my own personalized version of the Daytona 500 begins. Sliding out of bed, I immediately reach down to the floor to gather my purse and flowery catchall bag containing the fragments of my brain that no longer fit in my purse... -
The real cost of not voting
Posted Tuesday, October 4, 2016, at 2:30 PM1“If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.” I wish I had a dollar for every time I heard my dad use that phrase. As I grew up, I received the message loud and clear. Voting was my personal responsibility and a valuable piece of my American heritage... -
Caution: strong undercurrent ahead
Posted Friday, September 16, 2016, at 2:57 PMThe truth really is better than fiction… The year is 1503. The place is Florence, Italy. Niccolo Machiavelli, Florentine statesman, has a front-row seat to the downfall of his beloved republic, threatened by internal rebellions and an ongoing war with its arch enemy, Pisa. Machiavelli sets out to conjure a big enough Italian boot to stamp out Pisa for good... -
'What business is it of yours?'
Posted Monday, August 29, 2016, at 8:22 AMIt reads awkwardly, doesn't it? The words seem out of order, disjointed. Yet, ask someone what it means, and they probably know, "It's none of your business." "What business is it of yours?" comes from German writer, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), and belongs to the phrase, "If I love you, what business is it of yours?" I can't interpret Goethe, but he seems to be saying, "If I love you, that is my business. If you love me, that is your business."... -
Choose your seat wisely
Posted Thursday, August 18, 2016, at 5:09 PM1"There's nothing like the view from the cheap seats." Hmmm. Though I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment in the song, I'd have to argue if anyone tried to sell me on its practical application. The view from the cheap seats is usually pretty one-dimensional... -
Stay safe by being prepared
Posted Friday, July 29, 2016, at 11:09 AMDad was the keeper of the cars. Growing up, I received one ironclad rule about driving from him -- never bring the car home low on gas. As a teenager with limited funds, I grumbled a little under my breath. We lived in the country. Gas station options were limited. ... -
Can you cure a black thumb?
Posted Thursday, June 30, 2016, at 2:01 PMIs it possible to cure a black thumb? My theory says yes, but I'll let you know for sure in September. About a month ago, my quest for color and (sometimes short-sighted) appreciation for all things unusual, led me to adopt a cyclamen from our local Wal-mart. ... -
Be armed on election day
Posted Wednesday, June 15, 2016, at 4:05 PM"The vote is a trust more delicate than any other, for it involves not just the interests of the voter, but his life, honor, and future as well."--Jose Marti As November swiftly approaches, and increasingly more media time is devoted to political news and campaigns, our thoughts turn toward the 2016 election, and what its outcome will offer our generation and generations to come...
