New position, first touchdown
There is so much to learn about football! I thought I was doing really good. I understood the main objective of whatever positions Avery played.
I'll never forget when he so excitedly asked me if I saw him sack the quarterback. I had to text a fellow football enthusiast to ask what that meant. As the year progressed I knew what a sack was and I could actually spot it on the field without someone having to explain.
This year he comes home and says he been practicing a different position. He's been practicing the tight end position. Like I have any idea what that means. Of course, I Googled it. That really didn't help. All I know is a tight end can catch the ball. Which means a tight end is the one getting tackled not doing the tackling. I'm not real sure I know how I feel about this.
We had our first JV game against Sullivan. I was so excited all day. I was just ready to watch some football! I'm ready this year. I've got my #35 shirt on and my cowbells ready. But I was secretly nervous about this new position that I really know nothing about. Then it hit me, I knew nothing about his other positions either so just go with it.
Sullivan scores, we score but miss the two-point conversion. So they were ahead 8-6. A couple of plays go by and then it happens. The most gut wrenching horribly glorifying moment of my football mom career.
I see the quarterback throw the ball. I see number #35 open his arms. He's wide open. Is this really happening? I watched the ball literally slide right into his hands. I think it took a full 5 seconds to realize #35 belonged to me! What is happening, he's standing in the end zone....did he just score a touchdown??
I really don't know, I'm too scared to say anything, what if he dropped the ball? I swear it felt like a good half hour before the referees lifted their arms for the touchdown!!
I almost beat Brandon off the bleachers. I shook those cowbells with every bit of strength I had, luckily I didn't fling one across the stands. The man child had done what the coaches trained him to do and it worked.
One mom asked me how it felt, for once I was speechless.
