My scariest maybe-ghost story
As we get closer and closer to Halloween and with the Shawnee events on Oct. 29 growing nearer and nearer, I thought I’d share a spooky story from my college days.
Now, I know everyone has different thoughts on the whole “are ghosts real?” subject, and honestly, I’m not sure either way myself. But I’m willing to bet you can’t tell me this story wasn’t at least a little odd by the end.
In my sophomore year of college, I lived in a building that everyone joked was haunted. There was a top floor that was constantly locked and where no one lived, but there would be lights on at all hours and you’d hear footsteps when no one was up there. The usual stuff, right?
Well one night, my roommate and our friends decided we were going to watch the “Demon House” documentary about a house in Gary. We took over a study room for a few hours, turned off the overhead lights but left the lamps on. We definitely weren’t going pitch-black room. We weren’t that dumb.
So, we sit there, get a little spooked when the RA comes in for rounds, all is well. After its over, we sit around and chat about what we saw.
All of the sudden, half of the overhead lights in the room turn on.
It’s important to note that these lights were controlled by a button and motion-sense. Before starting the show, we had pressed the button to turn them off.
Go ahead, start the debunking. We sure did.
Nobody touched the controls. We tested the motion sense, even got right up to it. Nothing. Even if it were that, we definitely did not sit still through the night so it would have come on before that.
Maybe it was on a timer? We thought so, too. But we were in there long enough that it would’ve come on before it did if that were the case. These lights were off.
And what’s even more interesting, is the lights that came on were on the complete opposite side of the room from us. I think we would have probably lost it if the one’s above us turned on.
Anyway, that’s my story. The first one, anyway. I have another to share and there’s more to the residence hall ghost saga, but I’ll save those for next week.
