Former local doctor recognized for his dedication
It's been a couple of years -- maybe longer -- since I last spoke with Dr. Michael Miller, formerly of Linton.
I ran into him while at the scene of an accident on Lone Tree Road.
It was at night, it was bitterly cold, and he happened to come by and stopped to help. That's the kind of guy he is, always willing to lend a hand.
Dr. Miller -- an osteopathic physician -- now lives in Avon, and was recently honored for his work.
He was named the Physician of the Year by the American Osteopathic Foundation for his dedication to patients, medicine, and the profession.
"I was stunned when I received the phone call informing me I had been selected unanimously from a large pool of candidates," Dr. Miller said. "Like all physicians, I chose the profession because of my desire to provide the highest quality medical care to those who needed it.
"My goal has always been to enjoy what I do. I enjoy educating patients and my colleagues on the best care practices in my specialty."
Dr. Miller is AOA board-certified in general surgery and certified in chronic wound management.
"I have written numerous articles, edited and co-wrote the first wound care textbook for China and recently completed a chapter in a new wound care textbook due out this year," Dr. Miller said. "I continue to teach and have helped patients and health care providers all over the world, many of whom I consider my friends.
"Janet (his wife) and I continue to do things more out of our passion for our profession than financial gain as we still make about 10 house calls a month, work with numerous home health care agencies and nursing care facilities."
Dr. Miller's "out-of-the-box" innovative wound-care treatments and enthusiasm for helping people have led him into the world of inventions. He holds patents on four medical devices and continues to develop more.
Dr. Miller has published over 30 articles, co-authored a medical textbook, presented at countless national and international conferences, served as a principle investigator for 16 wound care projects, and has been designated as a National Institute of Medicine investigator.
He has spoke on osteopathic medicine in Israel, Italy, Canada, Netherlands, Spain, China and most recently Kuwait, where he promoted the latest advances in wound care.
Dr. Miller and his family moved to Linton in February 1998, and he moved to Avon in August 2009. He has many fond memories of his time spent in Greene County.
"It was a very hard decision to leave after raising two daughters there (Megan and Jennifer), and becoming as Jack Shelton put it, an 'inside outsider'. The opportunities to work with many great people in so many venues from the Linton Clean-up Days, to Habitat for Humanity, Linton Rotary, the many school activities and of course, Greene County Soccer Association from the first June 1998 meeting to create the organization to the development of the complex," Dr. Miller said.
"I am very proud to have had a small part in creating something for the kids of Linton to have. I remember when my colleagues from China came over for four weeks apiece and the tremendous reception they received from everybody. Even now, when we speak, they remind me of the many people they met and the wonderful time they had."
Dr. Miller still finds time to enjoy his passion for soccer.
"In my spare time I referee soccer, volunteer at a charity medical clinic, and am in the process of developing new products to improve health care and working with my domestic distributor for those already available," Dr. Miller explained.
"Life is anything but boring. We keep track of Linton, Greene County and our many friends through the (Greene County Daily World's website)."
Dr. Miller is the medical director of the Wound Healing Center of Avon, located at 8244 U.S. 36, Suite 1310 in Avon.
