SWIAC honors students for academics
A lot of time and effort go into making our area athletes successful.
Most of us never see that extra effort and dedication because it occurs in practice and during the offseasons.
The same is true for our area students when it comes to academics. Time spent during class working with a teacher, more time spent before and after school, and also in the evenings is something most don't see unless you're a parent.
The Southwestern Indiana Athletic Conference (SWIAC) conducts a banquet each year to announce its boys and girls basketball All-SWIAC teams, and at the same time the conference announces an All-SWIAC academic team.
This year's All-SWIAC academic team includes:
Ariel Fuller (Bloomfield)
David Hestand (Bloomfield)
Evan Rush (Bloomfield)
Logan Fry (Clay City)
Jacob Avooske (Eastern Greene)
Jordan Frye (Eastern Greene)
Sarah Hensley (Linton-Stockton)
Seth Herndon (Linton-Stockton)
Olivia Villain (Linton-Stockton)
Adara Crooks (North Central)
Angela Garrett (North Central)
Kyle Arney (North Daviess)
Hanna Stoll (North Daviess)
Rob Wilson (North Daviess)
Sarah McDonald (Shakamak)
Kaya Samm (Shakamak)
Christina Cullison (Union)
Shayna Nicol (Union)
Daniel Metzger (White River Valley)
Jenny Nolting (White River Valley)
Congratulations to all the winners and good luck with your future.
Eastern Greene Honor Society
Staying with the academic theme ... Eastern Greene High School's National Honor Society recently inducted new members.
They include:
Davis Russell, Darci Abell, Chelsey Bailey, Leanna Bailey, Mason Bohall, Tyler Brough, Blade Burris, Brooke Butler, Rachel Calkins, Nick Calvert, Landon Corps, Nick Cullison, Carter Divine, Alexandra DuBois, Zakary Eckerle, Logan Frye, Michael Hartman, Scottie Ingram, Austin James, Anna Jenness, April McKay, Macy Morguson, Jenae New, Casey Rugenstein, Baylie Schoffstall, Katie Strauser, Rachel Sturgeon, Lynn Wallace.
Schools induct new members into their NHS each year, so that's not big news.
But I've always been impressed with what Eastern Greene NHS co-sponsors Lori Vandeventer and Amy Frank have done with their students.
This is not an NHS chapter that just has members, it's a working chapter.
To become a member of the National Honor Society, a student must be in grades 10-12 and have a grade-point average of at least 3.3.
"(But) good grades are not enough. The Faculty Council reviews a student's attendance, leadership skills, service to the school and community, and overall character before the student is admitted into NHS," Vandeventer shared in an email.
"The Eastern Greene Chapter of NHS focuses its efforts on service projects for local organizations. The officers determine the projects for the year and then make preparations for successful outcomes."
The 2010-11 officers are Keith Milhoan, president; Rikki McCann, vice president; Janna Page, secretary; and Sydney Spice, treasurer.
Under the officers' leadership, the group will complete two projects each semester this year.
"Last fall, the Eastern Greene members volunteered to help assemble and distribute family Thanksgiving baskets at Backstreet Missions in Bloomington," Vandeventer said.
NHS members also rang bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas.
"Each member is also donating time after school to tutor other students. The club is currently planning to attend the annual Homeward Bound Walk to be held on April 10, where they will be working booths and entering a team in the walk to raise money to combat homelessness in the area. Members understand the importance of their service to the community," Vandeventer explained.
Each student must also complete one individual service project each year.
