Eastern Greene High School's volleyball team getting a lot of attention this week
Eastern Greene High School's volleyball team is the center of attention this week.
And for good reason.
The Thunderbirds will play for the Class 2A volleyball state championship Saturday at 1 p.m. in Ball State University's Worthen Arena at Muncie.
Eastern Greene, ranked No. 3 in the state with a 35-4 record, will face No. 2-ranked Wapahani (29-6). You can watch the game live at www.gcdailyworld.com by clicking on the Eastern Greene logo on the front left of the home page.
The school and community have done their part to help prepare the Lady Thunderbirds by showing lots of support, including a pep rally last Saturday after the team returned to school following its victory over Indianapolis Ritter at the Forest Park Semistate.
Students in Rich Tarr's communications technology class have interviewed team members and coaches and they will be released in archive form Friday. You can find the interviews at www.gcdailyworld.com by clicking on the Greene County Sports live stream logo on the home page.
The students will also talk about the volleyball team on its live weekly Thunder Bulletin show at 2:30 p.m. Thunder Bulletin is a weekly show produced with equipment provided by the Greene County Daily World.
A community pep session is scheduled for 10:45 a.m. on Friday in the high school gym. Tarr's class also plans to live stream that event.
"The team will load the bus right after the pep session and head for Muncie," Eastern Greene Principal Kevin Frank said.
"They will have a tour of Worthen Arena and will then attend a banquet that evening."
Frank said the team is expected to leave around 11:10 a.m. on Friday, and "we hope to have a local fire truck escort them out of the county."
The Greene County Daily World will publish a special section honoring the Thunderbirds and their quest for a state championship. Sports Editor B.J. Hargis and Sports Writer Rick Curl spent the early portion of this week gathering information and writing stories.
The section will be inserted into Friday's newspaper.
For more information about the state finals, including ticket prices and the location of Worthen Arena, go to www.ihsaa.org . The information will also be included in Friday's special section.
